Yowl!

The Dean of Student Life was correct. Yes, I would call 911, but it would be after the intruder was either deceased or completely incapacitated. No, I would never confront the intruder. My Remington 870 12-gauge pump would do it for me. If the student lived on campus, he could face disciplinary action (including dismissal) for possession of a weapon (the sword) on university property. If he lived off-campus, it is none of the university's damned business what he keeps in his home for self-defense.

There may be some new law attempts that come from this, but it's not like if a minor was murdered where you'd expect every bitchy mother to come running out of the woodwork to get everything with an edge banned. This guy was a known criminal, so I don't expect anything that major to happen that would affect everyone. He may be charged though, but even that might not be all that successful unless the stupid burglar who, charged at a guy with a sword, has a family which just happens to have a bunch of money for a good lawyer.

Been over this story with a backhoe in another forum. Get all the facts from as many sources as possible.

The kid will NOT be charged. Redcross v MD and numerous other binding caselaw allow the use of deadly force on one's property. Sword, gun, bat, doesn't matter. The kid's family and the campus are hailing him as a hero. The attacker had 29 prior convictions including assault and illegal handgun carry. He just got out of jail a few days before this incident and he attacked the kid who's back was to the closed garage door when this man had ample room to simply run away. Crazy, high or whatever, he had it coming.
