Yuna Knives

I do not own one of his beautiful creations but I wish I did !

Top quality folders.

i have one, its beautiful and very well designed. about the only negative thing could be said is their looks just arent for everyone, but that can be said about a lot of knives.

type s is just an overall thicker knife, frame, pivot. mine is a standard, and it certainly isnt lacking at all.

I own two Mini Hard-1's. One is a standard model with Large Choil and the other is a Type-S model with Small Choil. While I love my Type-S because of it's overall beefiness, the standard model is more than tough enough to handle whatever is thrown at it. Yuna is a fantastic maker and is a great guy to deal with as well. My top three favorite makers right now are RJ Martin, Yuna, and Tim Galyean so Yun must be doing something right. If you are looking into his work and are on the fence please listen when I tell you that you will not be dissapointed in his work. Fit, finish, and overall build are top quality. The Assassin is next on my list.

Looking at the available knifes, for the price I just can't see it. I mean you do get the unique look, and if it's worth the $300-$400 premium for those looks go for it!

Full disclosure- I have never owned one as I don't see the looks being worth the premium.

Do you really think that's a premium for a custom knife? That's large sebenza price range if you get a semi fancy one. IMO he has very good prices for what I've seen to be very good work.

No, I think you can get every bit the knife for $200 to $250 when talking his mini series. You just don't get those looks.
And you aren't really talking Large Sebenza prices either when comparing the basic models. Yunas are about $100 more.

Really ?

People fork out hundreds more for knives with far less features. Everything the guy uses is top notch , top quality material.

Top that off with a dollop of badass and you got one hell of a fine knife.

I don't have any of his knives but would like a mini hard once I have money saved and get on the waiting list.

Not saying they aren't fine knives. I'm not even close to talking smack or saying anything bad about them.

BTW- just because you can find examples of people paying more for the same or less does not say anything about Yuna. It says something about the knife people are paying more for, or something about the person who paid more.

You can get a new large seb for much under $300? Think you might be comparing apples to oranges a bit too much. But hey if the looks aren't for you they just aren't for you. In all fairness I can cut everything a yuna can cut and maybe do it easier with a $15 sod buster.

Just to clarify, are you comparing the Hard series to the Sebenza? That seems to me to be the only model that would compare in price. The others start at $530 and up.

Why are we even comparing a full custom that is made by hand to a production knife?

This is truth. Yuna knives are about as handmade as you can get. The guy does almost everything without power tools, I think he has a grinder and that is about it.

Mini or not mini, they aren't priced to far apart. Even with a base price most people end up paying $500-$550 for a mini hard folder. The only one that is in Sebenza price range is EQ series. So, you're saying it is too expensive? Overpriced? Well, then look at Emerson customs, Galyean full customs, Ken Onion and others. Prices easily go over $1000 and Yuna is under-priced in comparison. Of course you can say they are all overpriced and what people are paying for a knife is not an indication. In many cases knife is an Art and a Collectible item, not just a tool. Trying to associate a dollar amount objectively in either one of those two categories is nearly impossible. What people are paying for it or a similar item is sometimes the only indication of the value that you can get. Compare Yuna to other full custom (handmade) folders that are made the same way and see if you can find one with the same materials any cheaper. Yunas are 100% handmade, no CNC as far as I know, and this becomes quite rare.

The thing I really like about Yun's work is that it is unmistakeable. You can't look at another knife and say "it really looks like a Yuna". Just that Ying Yang pivot pin itself is original to Yun. As far as I'm concerned, Yun makes original designs by hand. Yes, he has permission from Spyderco to use the hole, but other than that, his designs are pretty much original. Also, they are completely made by hand. The guy uses hacksaws and other hand tools in combination with a grinder (that he made himself) and produces these extremely solid, affordable, and gorgeous looking customs. In my opinion, to even begin to compare these handmade customs to a production knife built off an assembly line is insanity as well as a slap to the face of the true custom maker.

EDIT: I'll also say this. To say anything, good or bad, about any knife that you've never even handled is quite ignorant. You may be able to tell a few things from a picture, but until you get it in hand you have no idea.

Because someone wanted to bring in Sebenzas when I offered my opinion. I have nothing against Yuna or anything bad to say about them. I just happen to have an opinion that differs from some others in this thread.

Totally agree.
