"Yvsa" AK: Should we send him to Nepal?

A while back some of y'all may recall me complaining about this 18" AK that despite my best efforts I was unable to get right. Yvsa volunteered to try it.

I just got it back today and man, what an edge. Shaves from tip to cho. I took it out and chopped through an 8" pine and it actually bit in and threw wood instead of bouncing off like it did before. When I was done I went in, stropped it a little and it shaved again! He totally overhauled the edge till it is really even and easy to sharpen.

In addition he polished out the butt cap and put this nice little bevel there right before the butt cap that looks totally cool. Also he did a number on the cho that makes it beautiful and artistic looking. ALSO he buffed the thing. It was stained from use. I can't describe how nice the finish he put on the blade. It isn't quite the shiny mirror finish that gets scuffed up easy, yet it's shinier than satin. I don't think I have ever had one with that nice of a finish on the blade.

So I thank him of course but I think maybe we need to pay for him to learn Nepalese and send him over to tutor the kamis for a couple weeks. If he could get them to put an edge like this on them and make the cho truly beautiful like this one it would be a wonderful thing.:D

Hey, I'm off work tomorrow. If I take some pix can somebody post them for me. You need to see this cho.:)

Uhh, Hollow....
you can't ship em THAT sharp!! ;)

Unless your willing to purchase Kevlar boxes that is... :D :D

Glad you like it and glad to be of service HD. And very happy that I had a good day to do it, those are rare some weeks. Not much makes me happier than being able to spend quality time in my work room.:D

Now I have a plain YCS to fix up and hopefully I will be able to get to it soon as well.:D
Then maybe I can finish up my Foxy Folly. I did get the camera book out finally to se if I can figure out how to transfer pix, but hell if Bill can do it I oughta be able to as well.;) :D

What did you use to sharpen the knife and how did you do it?
I am curious to know how you finished the blade surface.
Sounds like you did a great job on the khukuri.

Sure you can, and without a scabbard too.:p ;) I just wrapped it back up in the same newspaper that HD sent it in with just a bit of extra tape and put it in the same triangular box.
I did however hope like the dickons that the USPS didn't get wild with it and send it off so that it would come to a sudden stop; sending the whole AK out the end of the box!!!!

Arty I used my Grizzly belt sander and Grizzly buffer which gives me a 2" X 72" belt and three buffing wheels. I finished it yp on a sewn cotton wheel using chromium oxide over a white compound on a sisal wheel. The sisal wheel and white compound is what sets up the final finish. The C/O on the last wheel was used mostly on the edge as I didn't want a finish like the original.:)

:grumpy:Ain't nobody sending the Tribal Elder nowhere. We got him, we're keeping him.:p :grumpy:

Oh and there might just be a few Khuks waiting for you to weave your magic on;) :D

The other pic of the whole knife is over in the Quick Draw thread.

Thanks again Yvsa. It's killer. The blade finish and edge profile is awesome.
