As all old timers know and newbies are learning one of he most sagacious voices on this forum comes from Yvsa. He has given an abundant amount of excellent advice to all who care to read it and I remain forever grateful for his effort and I suspect many feel the same.

Well, here is his arrival test as posted in the "Hard Testing" thread and it is worth a thread of its own.

"That's why you want to hit something solid like a heavy piece of hardwood with each side and the spine of your khuk several times. Then chop into a heavy piece at the end and try to split the wood by pushing and pulling from each side or twisting the blade in the wood if you have the strength.
I mentioned it before about Uncle Bill once having a pic of him trying to bend an AK in the center of one of those huge wire spools.
You dan't want too get carried away and do something stupid with your khuk as obviously a Sirupati isn't going to withstand the same force that you could apply to a heavier blade."

Good stuff, and thanks...

There's a tree with a "V" at the local mountain near where I live where I try to bend user blades. Plus there's lotsa wood lying around to chop stuff or pound with the spine. Haven't broken one yet.

:)

Smack/Slap test - works for me.

I follow that up with at least a dozen Very Hard chops on wood/log/2x4/whatever perpendicular the grain/log. (not at 45 degrees)

Thanks for the kind words Uncle Bill.:) Here is a LINK too the thread Uncle Bill mentioned.:D

Bruise mentions something that I said somewhere, I think should've if I didn't, and that is a tree with a V in it. By that I mean a V shaped crotch in the tree that is very close together.
Place the blade of the khukuri in the crotch and then try too bend it, within reason of course although my "within reason" may be more than yours. I lean into them pretty damned hard!
But it doesn't have too be a crotch in a tree. It can be two trees very close together or a couple of heavy iron pipes for that matter, use your imagination's.:D ;)

As Uncle Bill says, "Test you khukuris upon arrival." or as soon as possible after.

Dang, I 've got some hard work in front of me. I've collected quite a few khuks this winter and haven't done anything but admire them in front of the fireplace.

Wasn't me... I stole that from you. :D

The only test that scares me is banging the spine on a log or hard object. If something breaks, it's gotta fly somewhere. I was thinking of using a burlap sack or something to put the knife in.

yeah I have been worried about that one as well. to test if the blade will break, hit it hard against a piece of wood. if it breaks, good luck.

I did try the test nevertheless, hoping the blade wouldn't break. for several reasons, wich should be obvious by now. Nothing broke so far. :)

"If something breaks, it's gotta fly somewhere"

Use a gargbage can lid in your other hand as a shield.

A very good test, and one I do without fail prior to taking knives out into the field.

I still think such a test should be done at the factory, before the knife ever gets to the customer.

Of course, even if it were, I would still test mine when it reached my hands.

That's dead on, Howard. Run your own test and never depend on somebody else to do it for you.

I've tried to get BirGorkha repeatedly to run this simple test and they will agree and do it. They do it for awhile and then it just sort of peters out. I'm not sure if it is due to laziness or simply knowing (the kamis know a lot of stuff that we don't) that the test is a waste of time. I even wonder what I'd do if I tested 499 with success. Would I go ahead and test the 500th, the one destined to fail, or would I say to myself ,"if you get 499 you'll sure as hell get 999 so what's the use."
