In one way they are nasty and ugly but in another way they are very beautiful. Depends on the viewer. I am betting Yvsa will find them beautiful -- especially if his file tells him the same thing mine told me.

Not knowing anything about the knifemaker's art, I find it incredible that all our beautiful khuks at some point in their creation looked like these.

:
These are even beautiful on this sorry old computer with the horrible grqphics!!!!
You're right Bro, there will be some work ahead on these, but oh such lovely work!!!

The hammer dingy finish will remain except on the edge of the spine and the edge bevels.
I can hardly wait to get started on them. It's a good thing I will have some time in Phoenix before we head home and I have to put them up for a while.
I think that purty yaller wood will look reely goot on these'uns!!!

Tim Lively and Mike Sweany of the Neo-Tribal bunch has been encourageing me to build a primitive forge. I can see that happening real soon now. The equipement the Neo-Tribal guys and gals use isn't that much different than the Nepal Villagers use. Perhaps I will learn to be a real kami in my own right if I ever learn to make a khukuri!!!!

Bill, how much do these unfinished blades go for? I would love to try my hand at this but since it would be my first time I wouldn't want to spend a lot of $ on something Im sure I will make a lot of mistakes with.

You have to do something besides galivanting around to all the Pow Wows.

Was the kami able to more the blade?

They don't look so bad. No need to worry about scratching or polishing these blades. However performance is where it counts.

These are beautiful? Yvsa, have you been at the firewater again?

Best of luck on your project. I think, though, you might want to tackle something a bit easier first, like Middle East peace or reformation of the Russian economy...

Yvsa --- what's your report on those 2 blades?

I couldn't be more pleased with these blades!!!!!!!

The only thing my Bro Bill didn't know maybe, was that we returned to Phoenix for another week of Vacation.
smile.gif

This has to be the Absolute Best Vacation that Barb and me have Ever had!!!! The Konvention such as it was, was Absolutely Wonderful with Great People, Great War Stories and a comaradarie that we find here every day, only better. It's just as my Bro Rusty said!!!!

The pix of the Hanuman blade gives Absolute Proof that the fullers are forged in, if anyone had any doubts. This one will take a bit more time to finish out like I want it.

I would say that the blade of the Chainpuri is at 95% finish as forged!!!!
I wasn't sure just what I was expecting, but my expectations on both blades is blown out of the water. I done a bit more file work on them this morning and these blades are going to be even better than my 18" AK!!!!
The Chaunpuri edge is about 0.040" thick if that, And It IS Hard!!! I would say after fileing them down a bit more that both are going to hit 60-61 Rc!!
I think I might have to see if Terry has any dark Black Locust to handle these with. The dark, hammer dingy finish with the bright steel highlights will look beautiful with a dark wood.

Then again perhaps someone I know with a piece of African Hornthorn Wood will send it to me as I forgot to ask while we were there?!?!?!?
biggrin.gif

I know this is getting long, But I would like to see everyone with HIKV buy at least one plain blade, even if they can't finish it.
These give me a more real sense of the Kami's talent and the Spirit that I can feel in these blades!!!!
There aren't too many Master Bladesmiths in the world that can finish a knife to this point of completion on a forge.
The Chainpuri would be good to go with just a handle and sharpened.
It's That Good!!!!!!

Khukuri FAQ

That is the best endorsement we have had in a long time. For those who don't know, Yvsa is a true expert.

A lot of production shops grind the fullers in the blades and that is why they are pretty shallow.

A fellow in Colorado who has access to one of the $10,000 Rc test units told me I'd sent him several blades with Rc at 61 but I was not sure. That old file of mine gives up when it bites 59 to 60. Anything higher tells it the same story -- we ain't gonna cut this!

Yvsa,
Know you will love working on these,
taking your time, how long ,time wise, until
completion?By this i mean until "you" are satisfied!
jim

Yvsa is in a position in life where he can take the time he needs and wants to do a job right. No deadlines. I am betting he will spend considerable time getting these two up to where he wants them.

Me? I'd have them in the field in a week -- looking like hell but doing the job.

Jim I have no idea really as to the time factor involved. I have other obligations to fulfill before I can do much of anything to them. Although I have rounded most of the spine on the Chainpuri blade with a file.

Bill's right about haveing them in the field in a week though. Although it woll take me longer than that to do the handles.
I am gonna leave the hammer dingy finish on the Chainpuri, but will probably work the fullers out a bit better on the Hanuman blade.
They will both have nice handles, but the blades will probably be more like village khukuri's as I am thinking at this point. I reserve the right to change my mind though.

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa,
Would like to see the finished product, would love to have been in your shop,
asking questions & seeing the work done!If you ever get another Hawk, like Rusty has,& Karma says send it to Jim,"Please do so"!
What did you use to sharpen the Kris & other blades at the Konvent? Thanks,
jim

:
Jim I have been trying to get my cuz to consider retirement and work on his hobby full time as he desires. He says he will work 'till he drops and I know the reasoning behind it, long story.
He does make some beautiful 'Hawks and I will relay the message to him.

BA's Barong and Keris and CRKT were already sharp, just needed a good stroping.
I used the Tripolui strop first and then the Jewelers Rouge to get the blades hair poppin sharp.

And now that I know he repairs a few Keris he will get my old sword size soon after I get back home.
Really good weapons need to be kept in a ready state of use imo and I am anxious to get BA's opinion on this sword sized Keris. I believe it's a goot un.
biggrin.gif

All that's needed to make a good size strop for khukuri and other knives is a 1"x1" straight board about 18"-20" long and some 9-10 ounce leather about 12"-14" long. Glue the leather to the board, trim the sides if needed and then treat with neats foot oil. Then rub the Tripoli into one and Jewelers Rouge into the other. You might need to use some more neats foot oil on them to get the abrasives to soak in better. That's the way I do it, others may have different ways.
You don't have to recharge them to often.
