I wil be making a large knife out of .226 thick Z-Finit stainless. The blade is going to be 7.5-8 inches long with a 5 or so inch handle. Over all length will be approximately 13 inches. I do not heat treat my own knives i send them out to Peters heat treating in PA.
I have used this steel before, but only a few times. I really liked it at 60HRC performed excellent with a medium sized tanto. (4 inch blade or less).
My question is what should i have it hardened to, to stand up to heavy use?
My thoughts were 59HRC or 60HRC.
Please let me know what you think!!

Z-FiNit is one of the rarer steel and also very expensive compare to most steel. I think there should be very few people experienced using it.

In theory in should be very tough due to low carbon content. I heard Peters can get only 59HRC on this steel. I think you should give them a call and ask what would they suggest after new year.

I believe they have updated it. I had 2 knives heat treated at 60HRC, it absolutely rocked. I got about 170+ rope cuts (i lost count and my hand was tired could have been 200).
But i will call them after the new year. I want this knife to perform perfectly.
Thanks for the recommendation!

I do mine at 59-60. It was a tricky learning curve. It actually reaches full hardness during tempering.

Well thats strange. So you think 59/60 should work? Its gonna be a user, and its for a repeat customer. I want it to hold up to whatever he will throw at it.
I just send mine to peters. Thanks for the info!
