zdp-189 Calypso Jr.

Looks like $125 or greater.

To me, I'd thought they will come down in market price now that other models have arrived on the scene.

Time will tell, of course.

I feel that the Caly Jr. ZDP will remain a collectors item for quite some time, I'm sure one day it will be valued for being the first Spyderco ZDP-189 knife, especially since it was made in such small numbers.

This is my favorite carry knife, at least among the few knives I have tried. It's much better than the ZDP Delica and ZDP Horn IMHO. Light, thin and sharp with great edge retention.

You have got to be joking!

I love Spyderco knives but...in my opinion, $125.00 dollars for a Caly Jr is just crazy, regardless of the blade-steel.

Look on the bay.

Suprised me too. But then, look at the 806 selling prices.

Crazy is a bit optimistic IMO.

I will sell one for $125 if anyone is interested. Never used, never carried, never sharpened, box, perfect, etc. I favor larger knives and, although the Calypso Jr is unique especially in it's razor edge, I don't keep knives that I don't carry. I've had this one long enough. SOLD

So you did sell it for $125? I'm glad I got mine back in '05.

No you will not at least not on BF. You will be banned if you attempt to sell in this forum again.

Agreed! No knife with a molded handle is worth that kind of cash. You can buy 3 non-ZDP189 Calys for that price. For that $$$, you should get G10 or micarta handles...

You can

I can't find non-ZDP caly's or else I would have bought them too. Do you have a website?

Thanks

They are on eBay as well as other sites at times. Google turns up several (here's one):

Dude, particularly on the Spyderco forums, every time someone like me scoffs at the idea of people spending up to $200 for a ZDP Delica 4, loads of people chime in defending the "free market" and all that crap. You get ostracized for suggesting that the ZDP steel just isn't likely to serve a person that much better than VG-10 or whatever else.

Bunch of steel snobs is what I have run into, and woe unto anyone who expresses doubt about the magical properties of this "last steel we'll apparently ever need," and they have no problem with people taking cynical advantage of what others will pay. They get on waiting lists, hoard knives, like the people who hoarded the Tickle-Me-Elmo doll back in Christmas '96 and sold them to a bunch of moron parents for $2000 -- yes, you read that right, 2K dollars. They were all over the newspaper classifieds at the time.

Barnum was right. And I'm not saying that the ZDP Delicas are not worthy knives, but worth $150-200 on ebay?! You have to be crazy or just wealthy and unconcerned with overpaying for something and getting taken for a ride.

edit: Oh, or out of control in one's impulses and unable to say no to oneself and one's material desires.

I'd love to have a ZDP Delica -- why wouldn't I? But as an adult, I have to look at the cost versus the satisfaction. Do I lack for a good knife with which to cut stuff? No, at the moment I have a PE Paramilitary and a CE Delica 3 on me, a Victorinox Trailmaster in my bag as well a Timberline Mini Pit Bull; and a CRKT Neck P.E.C.K. on my neck.

Unlike a bunch of people (who get sensitive if you question their decisions) I didn't have to have the latest greatest Delica at a cost more than double what I think such a knife should cost.

I have mixed feelings on this. While I don't like seeing people offering these things for twice or more what they bought it for just a year ago, isn't it their freedom and perogative and the freedom and perogative of people to buy it at that price? Is this a statement against capitalism itself?

Well, its the scarcity that drives the prices up. Not everyone collects knives for pure use. What do you think about stamp collectors? Paying $5,000 for something that cost 2 cents when it was released? And you can't even use it to mail a letter. How about art collectors? A print could cover the wall just as well as a multimillion dollar painting.

If you buy something on the open market, you can't over pay, because the market has determined the value of the item. Just because it costs more than when it was released doesn't mean you are overpaying. Especially if it continues to go up in value, then you actually made a good investment and got it at a cheap price. Either way, people who buy the knives on ebay value them more than the money that they spent, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Jeffery, With the second batch out you can probably find one for MSRP. I just paid $79.00 for one delica, and the same for a Horn. The second batch of those are out too. You ought to try one. I wouldn't pay above MSRP for one, and usually pay lower than that except for these ZDP knives. Regards, Joe L.

A knife ( no matter what its made of) like anything is worth what another will pay for it .
While this is true, my objection was not to the price but to the guy selling in this Forum, especially since he is not a paid member and hasn't the right to sell on BladeForums.
