Tonight I sharpend my WH Titan for the first time at 20 degrees. Really hard work. I hope this counts only for the first time! But it shaves again.

Love the sharpmaker though (and my WH Titan!!)

I have a Spyderco Calypso Jr with ZDP-189 on the way. Hopefully it will come razor sharp and I won't have to sharpen it for awhile, but when I do I'll take it to my Edgepro first and then touch it up with the Sharpmaker after that. :)

It will arrive razor sharp, at least mine did. Not being able to leave well enough alone. I did reprofile mine on my EdgePro to 10 degrees per side and then a primary edge around 12 degrees. I hit the edge with polish tapes of 3000, 5000 and 8000.

I haven't had any reason to resharpen but I would probably just hit it with the 30 degree sharpmaker.

There is NO way you could reprofile this steel with the Sharpmaker though.

U guys musta really used the edge to bluntness!!! I just wiped 3 time with the whites @ 15deg and stropped. Cuts straight down a piece of paper held with 2 finger.

Why do youse take it to the edgepro first.
Reprofile to the degree that you want and then maintain?

The Edgepro is an excellent tool for reprofiling, which the Sharpmaker is not so good at. (Unless you attach emery paper to the rods or get the diamond ones or whatever.)

If you want to reprofile, do it on the Edgepro and then use the Sharpmaker for the touch ups. This is the way I do things and it sems to be a pretty good strategy.

If my memory serves me, the WH ZDP-189 is 67Rc, while the SPyderco's is 64Rc. The Calypso Jr should be easier to sharpen. The Calypso Jr is ground acutely enough that you should only use the 15 degree angle. Touch it up every once in a while (don't let it get too dull between sharpenings) and you shouldn't be spending too much time and effort to keep it shaving sharp.

This has more to do with edge geometry, Spyderco uses an acute edge which the Sharpmaker micro-bevels easily and thus even a very worn edge can be restored to optimal with a few passes on the hones. If the edge isn't restored immediately with the Sharpmaker after a few passed on the medium rods then cut the primary edge bevel down with a coarse hone. A couple of minutes there will save you *hours* in the long run with sharpening time.

I reprofiled my Caly Jr. and my personal impression was that it reprofiled more EASILY than S30V! It sharpened very easily for me.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to reprofile ANYTHING on a Sharpmaker. It's just not the right tool for that. Well, maybe with the diamond rods.

How the **** are you setting a degree on a sharpmaker??????

excuse me, but the original shape of the caly zpd-189 is 40° or 30°? Must i reprofile the shape to 30° to have the same razor shape than new out of the box? does the 40° sharpening make the blade dull?

PS : must i have the diamond set and the ultra fine set for the ZDP or the original ceramic set of the 204 sharpener make the deal?

The NIB setting has been under 15 for many of the ones reported on the forums, adding a micro-bevel will only slightly reduce the cutting ability and only really of notice if you are cutting very stiff and very thin materials like plastic banding and such.

As Cliff mentions, the initial edge on the Caly is 30 degrees (inclusive) or under ( read that it may actually be 20 - 24) I would keep it sharpened using the Sharpmaker at 30 degrees. That's what I do.

This steel appears to be so durable that you really don't need to keep it at 40.

I'll give you a Sharpmaker secret but you must promise never to tell anyone. If you take a wedge of wood and put it under the end of the sharpmaker base you can get angles less than 15 degrees per side with the rods in the 30 degree position. What you are doing is moving the rod to a more vertical position. The more you push the wedge under the Sharpmaker the more acute (smaller) the angle will be. Only do one edge at a time this way.

Don't tell anyone!

Probably one of the easiest ways to reprofile a knife is to use a DMT course diamond wetstone. Make a 10 degree primary edge then use the Sharpmaker at 30 degrees setting.
