Zdp-189 vs zdp-189 coated in 420J2 steel.

It is called laminated steel. Typically, a harder core steel is sandwiched between layers of softer steel. In this particular case it is mostly the manufacturer's preference, but ZDP-189 is very hard to cut when it is the full thickness of the blade. The 420J2 outer layers are also more corrosion resistant than the ZDP core.

My caly 3 zdp189 scratched up pretty easily, but held a good long lasting edge and touched up easily with my edge pro. Re- beveling zdp is more time consuming.

420J2 is pretty soft, especially when compared to ZDP-189 so it will get scratched very easily. ZDP is a great steel though and it gets crazy sharp.
