ZDP blanks..

It has to be imported from Japan I would guess, and that's going to be a royal pain, because you'd have to order a large amount from a Japanese distributor.

Unless there are American suppliers who stock it, but I can't say I've ever heard of any(though in all honestly I haven't really looked)

Hope I don't offend anybody but I seem to remember a guy named Vassili say he got some from a friend in Japan and was going to make something from it. He mentioned that they were easy to get in Japan. Sorry if I am wrong here.

Here where I get mine from:

http://www.hatta.co.jp/price.html

However they do not speak English - I tried, so if you able to send mail in Japanese to hatta@hatta.co.jp you'll be able to buy one, I think. At least I bought once knife from Japanese site sending them International Money Order - it works between US and Japan. May be I am wrong but it does not much more expensive then let say CPM 10V.

Thanks, Vassili.

Exactly. I doubt any suppliers would ship small portions to the US, but if you had a contact over there, you might have better luck.

Current lead time for production ZDP is 10 months. Keeping some "in the works" is the best way to keep some around.

Some Japanese suppliers carry blanks, but Hitachi claims that "ZDP must be heat treated by authorized Hitachi heat treat centers".

Ken Onion had obtained and heat treated ZDP with good resuts. Maybe we can get some input from him?

Hey Tim, haven't you heat treated ZDP locally?

The Delica ZDP model should be shipping in a few weeks, for those that want to play with a solid ZDP model.

COWRY-X = C 3.0 - Cr 20 - V 0.3 - Mo 1.0

try finding Cowry-X instead if you cant find zdp.. just thought

HT according to them is same as for ATS-34 and Phill Willson already did it.

I contacted hatta again using simpliest possible English saying I like to buy ZDP-189 5x45x300 and I'll send you International money order and you'll send me back ZDP-189 by same mail (EMS). And I include autotranslation in Japanese -

He refuse to understand - "plese sutudy japanese".

May be someone here can check this? I wish I study Japanese some day, but now it is just impossible.

I can not find time (and energy) to focus on my ZDP189. So far it is in this state:

Thanks, Vassili.

There's a data sheet floating around that shows the heat treat. It's not the same as ATS-34. The austenitizing temperatures are surprisingly low.

Yes I have, and it is the same as ATS-34 with a temper of 250-300 F. depending on the hardness you want to obtain. Hatta also offers ATS-34 with a ZDP core, that is my favorite!!

Thanx Tim, that's what I'd heard.

We did a run with the 420 laminate and ZDP core. Customer reaction was generally favorable.

We were going to use the ATS laminate on the next run, but opted for the solid. I should have some in a couple of weeks. We're doing a short run of Delica's.

The above lists what you want and asks if they will accept an International Money Order, if not please send me the accepted methods of payment.

The exchange rate is irrelevant because you are paying him in Yen (FYI 1$ is about 120 Yen but the bank will have their own rate and there is a fee to change it which is usually a rip off, a bank transfer is the cheapest way by far)

You might have a problem with money orders, this place is in the dark ages where banks are concernerd, ATM's only became 24 hr a couple of years ago.

This is his address in Japanese, just print it out, I got this info from the link a few posts up, I assume its the same guy.
