was concerned about edge chipping on cardboard. got endura zdp today & did some early testing. only cut about 300 in. of double thick card. a little of the board was 4 layer and plenty tuff. no chipping on factory edge. what do yiou guys think about me beveling back to more acute angle since factory seems a little abrupt? thanks for any info. dennis

I have a Delica in ZDP-189 and have used it mostly on cardboard, plastic, and wood. It is 1/2 serrated. While the edge stayed sharp for a LONG time before needing attention, there are now 3 chips in the serrations and 1 that I sharpened out of the plain section. I have no idea how or what caused the chipping. In the end I respect ZDP-189 for certain tasks but it is finicky so I would not change to a more acute angle.

Well, there may be a reason for that factory edge that we're not privy to. I will say that I have a fully serrated one and it has suffered NO issues whatsoever, at least not yet! (knocking on wood here :D)

Are you going to take the primary grind down also, or just take the edge bevel down? The reason I'm asking is that if you seriously thin the primary, then I would keep the edge bevel at 30 inclusive or higher. I'm talking REALLY thin primary here. If you keep it stock and just grind down the edge bevel, you can probably go lower, as you'll still be keeping a good deal of steel behind the edge.

I've been somewhat abusive (unintentionally) with my zdp's, even the Krein'd ones, and they've all been much tougher than I would have expected.

sodak thanks for the info &* also the rest of you guys, the cardboard was all i could hold on to since your grip diminshes with age. i guess what i dislike about factory edges is the agrupt shoulder of edge bevel. i'm not capable of changing primary grind, if that is necessary i'll pay one of you guys. another factor is the endyra is wider blade than gec pioneer. theres something about the gec since it glides thru cardboard much easier thah queen mt. man.it's not all my spelling but my fingers are real fat, you guys evidently are able to figure it out which is appreciated. will relieve edge bevel & edc it for a while, if it holds up on carpet work really ca'nt ask more. thanks dennis

I think you'll find that ZDP takes kindly to convexing. Thin the bevel (widen it) and get it closer to a 'zero edge' until it's too thin, then slightly convex it, similar to but not quite applying a microbevel. If you'll get it thin farther up the slicing force goes down, and the convexing makes the edge stand up considerably longer. On ZDP that can be a while. I used a teensy arkansas translucent burnishing stone to convex it after using garnet stones. You probably need the finest diamond or possibly ceramic to work on it, some tough steel. Unless you own coticules, but don't buy one for a single knife..

update on usage of endura zdo189. was chopping some vines this morning & hit wire netting 3 times hard. i still get no chipping so i feel the reports on brittleness to be well overblown. thanks dennis
