So I reprofiled my zdp delica to a pretty shallow angle, but it was free hand on a water wheel/stone and then free hand on some dmt fine. So the edge was slightly convex. I think at the edge it might have been 20-25deg inclusive.

I was cutting some zip ties off a soft metal basket/cage. I slipped on one of the ties and whacked my edge in to the metal wire basket.

It was not a direct hit but I kind of sliced in to the metal a bit. I then checked my edge, and it was rolled over pretty bad. I have spent one hr with the spyderco brown ceramic stone, and I am not even close, I think I need to back it up all the way to the water wheel.

This was a hair whittling edge, but now the rolled area wont even catch on my nail.

That's what happens when zdp contacts a very hard surface, are you sure it wasn't a chip? In my experience, zdp doesn't roll especially when hitting another metal surface.

thats what happens when you have too thin an edge that similar to a burr. the edge rolled just like a burr. try not having such a wire thin edge and it will hold up better.

It felt like a huge burr, not a chip. Actually I could see the bent edge.

I usually have tougher edges on my until blades but everyone was raging about ZDP. I guess I took it too far.

So you feel that 20-25 is too thin for ZDP and behaves like a burr or wire edge? What angle do you recommend for ZDP for a typical user?

30deg would be my max for a light utility knife, but what I am trying to say that if you mess up and roll the edge it's going to take for ever to fix it with a pocket stone, or at least with the spyderco brown stone.

its hard to say how long it will take to fix the edge without seeing how bad the damage is. you may want to try the same angle that you had but dont have such a fine edge so its thin like a burr. you said the edge was slightly convexed. have you thought of convexing the edge and giving that a try?

Sharpening with flat stones free hand produces an edge that is convex enough for me. I have used sandpaper with a mouse mat and found that I really need to get some shallow angles if I want the cutting edge to be around 30deg.

I will spend some time on a dmt fine, and see how long it takes, I have a feeling I need to go to the water wheel, but I don't have access to it atm.

Really... In my experience, I've smacked the edge onto a metal dumpster a few times. I looked at the edge, and there was no visible damage whatsoever. VG-10 is the steel that has a dead edge after I accidentally do this.
