So,

After seeing Gary Grayley's mini Cyclone Tom Krein Regrind I had to have one.

Purchased one and had it shipped directly to Mr. Krein.

got it back the other day.

the regrinded blade is AMAZING, however the action is not so good.

The AO is slow an with it turned off the action is far from smooth. I cannot use the flipper without MUCH wrist action.

compared to my other AO knives (ZT-301, Spec bump, Boa) the Mini ZDP is slow and rough.

I know Mr Krein reassembled the knife and lubed it with flourinated grease I though the grease might be the issue.

I took it apart cleaned off that grease and relubed with CLP, the washers were free of and burrs or rough spots. everything seemed to be in working order.

Put it back together and still not smooth, I tried different pivot screw tension still not feeling right.

My spec bump and ZT are SOOO smooth. I know if i removed the AO they would glide right open using the flipper

What should I try next???

Thanks guys

Well,

I took it apart a second time when I had more time to troubleshoot it.

I gently polished the bronze washers and the surfaces they interface with, I checked that the blade rotated smoothly on the pivot, I checked the AO linkage for any issues, found none but slightly chamfered the ends with a diamond file.

Most likely all that helped slightly but the main issue was:

My Mini Cyclone is very touchy about the first handle screw from the pivot end being too tight.

Just a little too tight and slow opening, May be a slight tolerance issue as if the backspacer is minutly too thin or something. The second and third screws can be tight but that first one must be a little less tight then i would like.

The pivot has to be just right as well but I already knew that.

My personal AO test is to hold the blade against the AO tension with just the tip of my finger, let my finger slip off. If all is good the knife should fully open with a thwack. My ZT301, spec bump and Boa all do this easily, and now so does the ZDP Mini Cyclone

Hope this helps someone

Geoff,
Glad to hear you got it working again! I hope I didn't mess anything up when I put it back together!!

No I'm sure it wasn't you

And you were correct they are a bit of a pain to get back together, sorry, If I do another one I'll just send the blade.

This is the first knife i have ever had reground, it is amazing!!!

Thanks Tom
