was concerned that my rebevel would chip on hard duty[ in fact i expected it ] i had put acute bevel on endura zdp189 & tested it severely. we put out 4 1000 lb . bales of hay.[ we call them ton buns] & the hay was wet on bottom from 5 in. rain, covered with mud. for people whom are,nt in the rural scene these bales are covered with poly string net to keep them together. i used the endura to slice across 6 ft. of mud ,hay, & wet straw. i buried blade to handle & really put the pressure to the cutting since it was 36 degrees & we had to bring each bale 1/2 mile to cows. after all the other & the poly net i went to ranch & washed knife off. i started with a razor edge & endura wold'nt shave hair after the task.my bropther & i were amazed since there was no chipping at all.we put razor edge back with diamonds & custom butcher slick.i had heard some forum members had chipping with the zdp but after the mud & all the dirty poly net we had no damage. i do,nt expect the zdp will be any problem in nearly any situation.dennis

Thanks for the info! Now try banging it on some jagged quartz and see what happens.

Why would you do that? Why would you suggest doing that? Do you take a new car and ram it into a brick wall to test drive it?

I have reported his posts as trolling.
Both in your thread and this one.

In 08 I made a few leather sheaths, doing most of the cutting and trimming with my ZDP-189 Caly 3. Of course it felt pretty smoothed over after finishing a sheath, but it would still cut leather reasonably well. Last fall I made another sheath, this time using two VG-10 blades. By the end of the project one of them was completely dull, the other well on its way, and this sheath didn't even get as much trimming as previous sheaths.

ZDP-189 is good stuff for sure.

ZDP usually chips because of incorrect knife usage or contact with something hard. My dads endura gets chipps weekly but he is not what you would call a smart knife user. ZDP is more prone to chip than other steels but in reality it takes some effort to do so.

My ZDP microchipped whenever I cut cardboard with it. It just seems lo like to make those tiny chips rather than roll. Good to hear that this isn't the case with the OP.

I have never had any work knife that would maintain an honest, shaving razor edge after some good use. In fact, I haven't had much luck keeping a razor edge on any of my work knives. Pocket knives that cut up boxes, open mail, cut up apples, etc., yes. Work knives, not so much.

I was glad to see the ZDP do well in the hands of an experienced user. I appreciate the honest opinion, and have a couple of ZDP knives in my sights. I was wary of chipping, though.

The longer an edge can last for me through the day, the better off I am. I have heard and read so much on ZDP, it is hard to know what to think.

This may put a new spin on ZDP for me.

although the 189 did'nt chip on mud & the rough straw if i'm going out to cut all day i would go with gec1095 since edge touchup is easier. but for cardboard & tape in the workplace the zdp is choice since you ca'nt take a sharpener to work.

I have done your type of testing with a 1095 fixed blade, and my ZT MUDD in 154 CM. Both of those knives were quite dull after one bale, but could be brought back quickly using non-power means.

I have a Spyderco Gayle Bradley in M4 which I haven't yet cut bales with, so I don't know how that steel will hold up, hopefully better than the 1095 and 154 CM.

But I've been eyeing a couple of knives in ZDP, I'm quite tempted!

Thanks for the report on your Endura, Dennis!

My dads endura gets chipps weekly but he is not what you would call a smart knife user.

That depends. Does his son regularly fix the damage? :p Reminds me to remember to bring the DMT paddle when I see my dad (he keeps chipping his Centofante folder - maybe he needs something in ZDP?).

i have the bradley in m4 but that knife is too nice to gum up with mud & rot. ideally a 5 in. blade would make task easier . the bale was only tried since i wanted to go rough with the zdp. think i'll use becker 9 next.
