Hi Guys,

I know I'm new here and this is my first post. I have been watching and reading for a while. I will hopefully make it over for an introductory post in a bit. But I have a question first. I am a mechanical engineer and really like to have a pen on me at all times for field visits and things of that nature. I currently have a few Zebra F-402 pens. I have been looking through here and see that many people like the Zebra F-701 pens for everyday carry. Is there anyone who knows if the F-701 has a smaller diameter than the F-402. The 402 almost feels a little too bulky at times. I would also be open to recommendations for less than $20. I would prefer a smaller sleeker pen for everyday carry. It must also have a larger clip than lets say most of your stand Cross pens. Thank you.

I have both the 402 and 701. I'll post pics in a bit for comparison.

But, yes the 701 is slimmer. The Jotter is another nice pen too.

Thanks for the responses and help. I really like the Zebra pens. It would just be nice to have a smaller pen to carry. Thank you.

I seem to have left my 701 in my locker at work, but here is the Jotter compared to the 402. I also carry a Tactile Turn "Mover" pen, it's a fatter straight bodied pen.

I also use a mechanical pencil and have learned to prefer the 0.7mm size over 0.5mm as it is less fragile unless I am trying to write numbers in a very small space. I use the Pentels a lot and never really cared for the Zebra version.

I am a big fan of the Parker Jotter. Like the stainless version best. Price is good. They don't last forever, but write very smoothly.

I like the 701, especially when you swap the plastic top with the metal one from a 401.

The full stainless Parker Jotters are nice looking, but they are not durable. The bit where the barrels screw together is thin, flimsy plastic, and I've broken several over the years. The metal is also rather thin, and if you drop it on the tip, chances are you'll dent it and the tip won't go out or retract until you stretch the metal back out.

The 701 and 402 barrels are the same diameter. That's why you can switch the end caps like Aaron recommends. The difference lies in the are where you grip them. Instead of the soft rubber sleeve on the 402, the 701 has knurled steel. I like the grip it offers but others may not. You can also use it to file your nails....
