I'm wanting to use some unstabilized zebrawood to make some scales for my BK2. After reading articles on the net it seems Teak oil is recommended. Some say to let it soak in teak oil, others say apply it with a rag etc. Which should I do ? Also should I treat the would first them make the scales or vice versa ?

Thanks.

I'm going to assume that you will bolt the scales on using the original BK2 screws.

Do all your cutting and drilling, finish the scales to about 180-220 grit then soak for a few days. Not sure if it helpswith teak but I'll add a little bit of mineral sprits to tung oil when I do a soak, makes it a little less viscious and hopefully penetrates a little better. Let the scales dry for a few days then go ahead and do your finish sanding. Rub on a few more coats of teak oil, depending on the finish you want you can sand with progressively finer sand paper between coats. Bolt on to knife and go cut something.

Ive been woodworking for 10+ years and i work with zebrawood regularly with bentwood rings. Ive never used it for knife scales, but for other applications i soak the wood in tung oil for 24 hours. The results are unbelievable, and im sure it would work for knife scales as well.
