Can anyone tell me how well made the pouch that comes with the Zeiss 5x10 Miniquick monocular is? I'm interested in EDC'ing one but I don't want to tear it up as it will ride in a cargo pocket.

Mine came with a pocket clip and no pouch. I use a Greco folder sheath for my MiniQuick and a LensPen.

Esav,

Is the lens pen for the miniquick--or does it serve some other purpose?

I carry my miniquick in a cargo pocket most of the time. My wife made a little "sock" out of a lens cleaning cloth. If a glass element comes in contact with the sock, at least its up against something soft and non-abrasive. In the next few weeks, she is going to make pocket organizers for my cargo pockets. This will keep all my edc gear from moving around. It should also provide additional protection for the miniquick. (She is amazing with a sewing machine.)

I found 2 rubber caps (from a lip balm stick) that I use to cover then ends of my Ziess and throw it in my bag. Working great so far.

Thanks!

Scott - you are lucky to have your wife making custom stuff for you. It is very difficult to find the right pouches for EDC gear.

The rubber caps sound like a good idea.

Do you remember the brand of lip balm?

No, but I think I got it at REI. The caps are orange in color. It think it was the kind that you could hang around you neck.

Sorry I don't remember it's been a while. I'm sure that there are other brands that will work.

I received a reply from the Zeiss customer service. Apparently they sometimes do include a pouch. I asked if they could give me a description or send an image of it. If I get a response, I will post the results here.

Scott, the LensPen works great for the MiniQuick. Usually all I need is the pop-up brush to clean dust off the eyepiece. I also carry Steiner 8x binoculars a lot, and I just keep the LensPen sheath set-up available for that, too. Even carrying binoculars, I like to just grab a quick look with the MQ sometimes

Your wife will probably be making you ideal organizers based on your specific needs. For anyone looking for an off-the-shelf product, the Spec-Ops Dry-Cell On-Board organizers are made for cargo pockets. I just checked their website and see they have a Mini Pocket Organizer now that's a little more compact and even more accessible.

How do you guys like the Zeiss MiniQuick? I carry some Bausch & Lomb 8x20 LEgacy's in my laptop bag, but they're bulky for EDC and not quick to deploy. Cargo pants aren't an option during work hours and I've been wondering about a small monocular.

I'm a bit of an optics nut and if size wasn't an issue, I'd just use my Zeiss 8x40 Classics, but they're not portable enough for EDC in my world.

I go back and forth on this, mostly depending on what I'm doing. If I'm just dressed lightly and not going anywhere in particular, I find myself putting a ballpoint pen and the MiniQuick in a shirt pocket pretty much every day.

If I am going somewhere away from home, I generally carry the MQ in the sheath with the LensPen. If I'm going to the lake, I take my binoculars -- and the MQ and LP anyway.

I have a cheap 6X monocular and the 8x Mak, but they aren't as clear as the MQ, so they generally stay home.

Frankly, if you like the idea of a monocular around, the MQ is great in office dress -- it's just another fat pen in your pocket, and lighter weight than some of them.

I have a deep appreciation for fine optics. I always have something at hand because sometimes you just need to get a better look at something. :D The MQ might not be the most powerful mono out there, but the clarity is simply outstanding. It's so small and light that you can easily forget you have it on you.

It's a nice case, real leather, with a single snap.

It's only 4.5" long and .5" wide. It weighs less than an ounce. There is simply no reason NOT to carry it. I also have an 8x monocular that I got from Brookstone. It's sharp enough but too heavy and bulky for edc. And even though the Miniquick is only 5x while the Brookstone in 8x, I can see more detail with the Miniquick. One problem with lightweight optics is that it's difficult to hold them steady. For me, 8x is pushing the limits.

To answer your question though-- I LOVE my Miniquick. If you're not put off by the price, get one!

Dizos,

My wife does custom sewing for others if you have something in mind. The reason she won't be working on my pocket organizer for a week or two is because she's busy with another project for a paying customer.

Send me a PM or email if you have an idea for something. I'll put you in touch with her. Only problem is, you'll end up pushing MY pocket organizer into next month. :-)

Luv the forums and had to weigh in, though not a huge contributor. Just got one of these puppies as an early x-mas gift and luv it! No pouch, but had a leather Diplomat pen pouch that fits the Miniquick perfect. Saved twenty bucks and think I prefer this. Go to your local pen/stationery shop and ask for a leather pen pouch. Some will sneer at you ("a leather what?) and some will accomodate. Takes some work.

Please resume. Back to lurking. Keep up the interesting work!
