Hey all,

I have been interested in a Recon Scout for a while now and just discovered the Zero Tolerance 0170 Combat Knife. There seems to be very little info or reviews of the ZT 0170 but from what I can see, read, and feel it seems like a legit blade for the $120 price point.

Do any of you have any thoughts on this blade as it relates to the Recon Scout or any other blade for that matter?

My purpose is mostly survival, backpacking, camping, hunting, and some tactical use.

Thanks guys.

Welcome to the forums.
IMO a ZT product will always be the better choice. The quality, fit and finish and customer service are well worth the money. Cold Steel can not match ZT in these respects. YMMV

depends on what you need it for. i would be hard pressed to reccomend a zt over the cold steel based on the reviews on the recon scouts capabilities toughness and suitability to the tasks your looking to use it for. the blade on the zt doesnt look heavy enough for chopping or batoning wood. and your loosing a couple inches reach to the cs knife. the zt looks to be primarily a fighter or sd tactical knife. 2 totally different pou`s in these 2 knives. go with the recon scout.

I agree with what SOLEIL said, but ZT knives were designed for mainly tactical usage.... the 170 is no exception. It also seems alittle lacking in the blade length a weight departments for camping/outdoor use. The Recon Scout is much more suited for outdoor use (chopping, bottoning, etc.). I'd go with the Cold Steel for what you said you'd use it for...

Just taking a quick look at the steels, i would say that the steels are about the same. The ZT's steel, while it has less carbon, has way more chromium. they are basically the same price from knifecenter, and you are gaining about 2 inches of reach with the CS. your decision. also, check out the kershaw outcast. it is a big, solid knife with D2, and a really nice grip IMO. it is a bout 2 1/2 inches larger, but it is scary.

Thanks for your input. For some reason I thought the ZT had a thicker blade but at .125 it may be a bit thin for what I need.

Is there anything else out there that I should be looking at in this price point?

As thegeek574 said. The Kershaw outcast. Definitely give it a look, its a heck of a blade.

If you are looking for something that is right around that size, then look at the KA-BAR Beckers. from all i hear, you can't beat 1095 steel, and those look quite, shall we say, significant in size and heft.

+1

You're going to be much better off with a ZT.

From your original post: "My purpose is mostly survival, backpacking, camping, hunting, and some tactical use." I currently own both the Recon Scout and a ZT 0100. Given your intented purposes, it's an easy choice. Go with the CS Recon Scout. The ZT combat knifes are primarily built for just that, combat. The Recon Scout can do all of the things you've listed quite well.....and is pretty darn handy as a combat knife as well. YMMV

I own the 0170. The knife is good, but clip on the sheath will not ride well on a belt - it's better attached to MOLLE gear. The sheath is not ambidextrous - plan on getting a custom kydex. I've tried putting it in a 6" Spec Ops combat master, but the shape of the guard prevents the blade from seating completely, unless you make modifications to the insert.

Also, it's pretty big.

Here's pics of mine to compare side by side with some other knives, including a Nimravus 141.

Get both knives.

Both the CS or the ZT would serve well IMO. If I am choosing from those and I plan to do any chopping/wood work I'd go with the Recon Scout.

You might check out some of the Scrapyard Knife Co. offerings. For just a tad bit more money you could pick up a Regulator/Deregulator that I think does a great job as a chopper (it's .33 inch thick) and combat/tactical blade. Good luck choosing.

I own a CS Recon Scout and have had nothing but excellent experiences for the primary purposes you mention. The extra length and thickness are great for batonning and chopping. I have been very pleased with my Becker BK 2 Campanion for similar reasons and purposes as well. More like the ZT in length, but thickness and durability is excellent, and it is considerably less expensive than the ZT and the CS.

The ZT 170 shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the Recon Scout. The 170 is like a border Collie [or something equally unipressive] and the Scout is a Rottweiler. [ sometimes when we go for walks I'll carry the Trailmaster and my Rottweiler carries the Scout and sometimes we trade. In either case we're always ready to kick some serious ass]
A better comparison might be between the Scout and the ZT 100 [or is it 150?] I don't have the latter but it looks pretty good in photos. It's more expensive than the Recon Scout though.

How is the ZT 0170 a border collie? Have you directly compared it to the Recon? If not, then how can you make such a statement.

When I hear recon scout, I see this...

Doesn't look like a rottweiler.
