Zero Tolerance 0300 series question

On the ZT 0300 on the titanium side of the knife handle there is portion of the titanium that is cut out just at the begining of where the liner lock starts. My question is, is that portion of the titanium cut out just to allow the liner lock to bend more easily or is there another reason. I hope I'm describing the area good enough./

Welcome to BF! You mean where I pointed the arrow to in the picture below? Yes, tension-relief cutout to allow maneuvering of the lock... which is a frame lock, by the way.
