Just scored a ZT 0400 NIB for $73.00. I only went after it because it is on the discontinued model list. My question is should I keep it NIB to sell once they are gone off the grid? I turn Spydies around like this every year, but I'm new to the ZT models and not sure what kind of potential it will have.

Excellent score , but I don't get what you are asking
You are asking if you should be a prick and pull a price gouging on other knife fellas in the future with this discontinued ZT like you are doing with your Spydercos ?
My answer would be no , there is nothing I hate more in the knife world then lousy pricks who are pulling these stunts

I doubt that the 0400 is destined to be a collectors item. I say use it.

Definitely a double edged sword. I agree with mossy that it won't be a collector's item but that's still a good score at $73.

On the other hand, I've bought a few items at a higher than "good deal" price that had been discontinued for a while and was still very satisfied with the purchase. One example is a Leek that once sold for around $35-$40. It had been discontinued for a while when I bought it at $90 and I was still satisfied with the purchase.

I find prices of discontinued items to be weird sometimes. For example, I don't understand why people pay $250 and above for a ZT0551 when the new ZT0550s are coming out for ~ $200 other than to collect them? They seem like 95% the same knife with the 550 having some improvements.

The Kershaw Tilt is a good example of a knife increasing in value. I think the original street price was a little over $200 and they are selling for $300-$350 2nd hand now even though another run of them is coming. Another example is the ZT0500 MUDD. It's now going for double what the street price was. I guess in the end, people that want it cheap will hate you but someone that wants the knife and missed it during current production will love you.

I don't think the 0400 had the popularity of the 0500 MUDD, which now sells for higher than it did when stocked in stores. Sorry Raz, but I don't really have any problem with someone using a little forsight to buy and put back certain knives in the hope they will generate more money once the knife is discontinued. Afterall it is THEIR money they are risking and if they get a big return...........so be it. It is the American Way!!

I'm afraid that's how things work. I'm not a NIB collector, I carry and use my knives. If an item is no longer in production and a collector wants one then he will pay for it. He is doing it for his own gratification. Market value is not price gouging. If, I sell it after one year for $200 then it's more of an investment for me.

Now I may or may not be a prick, that's another issue. :jerk it:

I think it holds little collector value if any at all, since it was quite unpopular to begin with. The 0400 was overshadowed by the 0350 & 0200 and passed over because of the recurved tanto blade. I like it a lot though, and mine is often carried and heavily used.

I agree. Unless it gets some screen time I doubt many will be clamoring for it. A shame though, it is a good knife. Nice strong tip and the recurve worked well for staying on and cutting all the way through. My only issue was that it was bigger then I needed/wanted and got ride of it and replaced it with a Tanto Groove.
