Just got my 0562CF in the mail today and noticed along the edges of the carbon fiber scale its finished very "rough". There are some nicks and pitting and its very uneven. Anyone else have this happen? All of the videos Ive looked at on youtube the edges look smooth and contoured. I have a 0770cf and a 0566bwcf and both the carbon fiber on those have zero issues and look great. Ive already emailed ZT about sending it back fr a replacement scale which I'm sure they will do since they have great customer service. Just a little disappointing receiving it in this condition.

CF can "flake" when contouring through the different layers. Considering that ZT does the finishing by machine, you won't get a nice even look that can be done by carefully contouring the material by hand.

If there are voids in the CF, then this will be more noticable. More voids=lower quality CF

Anyways, I wouldn't worry about it. It still cuts fine, right?

you are absolutely correct.

Im not sure if I would return it or not, but being as I used to have one, and it did not look like that, I know there are better ones out there.

OP: if it Bothers you send it back.

I'm assuming ZT will replace the scale if I send it to them. The other 0562CFs Ive seen haven't had the same issue as mine and look very smooth with no groves in them. Its my 3rd ZT knife and the most expensive one so far, so its going back to get a cleaner scale hopefully.

There's almost no such thing as CF with no voids. Yes, contouring can make it more noticeable.

I wouldn't be worried about it, it's just the nature of the beast. If you want the CF look without voids, stick with Spyderco's CF stickers over G10.

I'm sitting here looking at the one I own right now. Mine does not have those machine marks. I've seen a lot of ZT 0562cf (I work retail); it shouldn't have those defects. Considering the amount of money it costs, I'd return it. But, that is me. I'm sure the defects are only cosmetic.

Looking at mine now and there are no marks like that anywhere on the CF.
Send it back bro......it'll continue to bother you.

CF can indeed have "voids" little pockets of air when it is being made. It happens, from the cheapest to the highest dollar material. If you aren't happy, send the knife back to where you bought it, or contact KAI.

The "defects"'come from the process in manufacturing. The material is made in very large sheets usually, and as. I ,mentioned before, voids, wrinkles, and other anomalies can be present. The cost of the product has zero to do with it, value is a perception. There are much higher priced knives with even worse finishes than the one in the OP, and that is "just how they are made".

I'd send it back. Mine is as smooth as a baby's butt.

I had one of the first 452 with similar voids in the CF. I sent it back to ZT and I think they just tried polishing out. It came looking a tad bit nicer but still noticeable. I sent it back for a refund and just recently hand picked one out from my dealer. Send it back or you'll never be happy.

I agree. I'm just going to send it back to the vendor I bought it from.

meh unless you received a good discount, I would send it back if it was new..
Sure carbon fiber has imperfections but not to this degree. My zt0350 was near flawless.

That's just the nature of the milling operation ZT does in combination with the carbon fiber. I don't know what quality carbon fiber they use, but all carbon fiber will have some voids. I have them on my 0452cf and have never minded them. If you send it back my guess is they will find the scale with the lest voids and put it on, but it may not have no voids. I would just keep it and deal with it or try to polish them out yourself.

Who was the dealer if you dont mind sharing? Unfortunately things like this do happen, typically the dealer will catch it before sending it out. I'm sure either way they will take care of you!

Beside the obvious how do you like it? I've thought about one but always seem to have something else pop up on the list before it!

Cheers,

Justin

That's not acceptable for a $240 knife. I'd try first to swap it with your dealer, then return to KAI for a new scale. A lot depends on how you like the rest of the knife...how's the detente, lockup, edge, stonewash?...if you like everything else about the knife, it might be best to seek a new scale. It would suck to get a pristine scale with a weak detente.

I ended up sending it back and ordering one from Kershawguy and the cf scale are flawless :)
