Hey all! I'm new to the world of ZT knives, and I'm very interested in a 0550. After looking around a bit, I've noticed that there appears to be an older version and a newer version, but I'm not exactly sure the difference between them. Is the older one bad or just older?

Any help or comments that you have would be appreciated!

Nick

The older version has the lock cutout on the inside of the frame. The newer version has the cutout on the outside. The new version also has a deep carry pocket clip.
I have an older version , bought a new one, liked the old version better and sold the new version.

The new version has a deep carry pocket clip and the cutout on the lock bar is on the outside instead of the inside, these are the only two differences. The cutout switch is supposed to be functionally better but I have never heard anyone complain about the old style at all. Both are the exact same knife when it comes down to functionality, it is really just a matter of visual appeal and whether you like deep carry pocket clips. I personally love the look of the new ones and do like deep carry clips but the old style was discounted to a price that was just too hard to pass up so I got that one. No complaints at all, absolutely love the knife and you can't go wrong with whichever you choose. When you get one the detent on it may be very strong meaning the knife may be really stiff and surprisingly hard to open, before you panic just realize there is a break in period. The detent ball will wear a slight groove in the blade and it will become MUCH smoother and easier to flick open with your thumb. Just keep playing with it (flicking it open and closing it) while watching tv and in a few days it should be great.

If I may ask, why did you like the old version so much and/or dislike the new one so much?

It was strictly visual. To me the old one looks cleaner, functionally they were the same.
But I did like the clip on the newer version , except for the black logo. I know I'm weird.

Lock up is great in both. The new design in theory will be slightly better but I would think in practice makes little difference. The low rider clip is nice though on the new model but with the great deals to be had on the old model you can't go wrong with either. The cut in the inside makes for a nice smooth uninterupted back scale but the recess can collect a bit of pocket lint that you can't just wipe out, you can easily blow it out though. This in no way impacts knife function and you won't see it so unless you are totally neurotic about blowing lint out of the inside really doesn't make much difference. Both are very nice knives.

The problems you have heard are vocal minorities who have that 1 in several thousand that has an actual issue, which ZT/Kershaw fixes quickly, or people that have disassembled their knives and created the issue themselves because they don't know what they are doing. ZT/Kershaw are quick to take care of these issues as well.

If you don't own a ZT or Kershaw yet you may not know, but their customer service is second to none. I recently asked for a old style ZT 550 clip and they sent me an entire parts kit with washers, frame screws, the whole works. They don't get enough praise here and sometimes it may seem like there are lots of issues but that is far from the truth, the only reality is that there may be a lot of whiners. Get a ZT, either new or old. And if you don't absolutely love it, you should have no problem finding someone who will take it off your hands at or near what you paid for it. I think once you have a 550 in hand, or most any ZT for that matter, you'll love it and there will be no need to worry about what price you'll get for a used ZT.

Does one have better lock up then another? Because I'v heard of problems about both. What do you guys recomend?

I've had three 550s, still have two. Never had an issue of any kind with any of them. The lockups have all been remarkably consistent, right at 40-50%. No blade play, great F&F. I have an original version and a new version and they're identical twins except for the lockbar cutout.
