zHow annoyed is acceptable?

About eight months ago, my dog was diagnosed with cancer. The vet gave him two to six months.

He's ignored that.

And although now he's generally acting healthier that the day he was diagnosed, he's decided that a good way to say he wants to go outside is to stand in front of me and pee. He won't bark or anything like that.

I am not amused.

But how annoyed should I be? I try to think that he's only got a couple months left and I should indulge such things, but he's already defied the two-to-six month limit, so for all I know, he's going to be doing this to me for another year or two.

Any advice on how to handle this?

How do you want to remember him? Let that guide your actions...

I'll remember him the same either way. He was a good dog who got sick.

It's more a matter of how I'll remember me.

John,

Does he do it in the exact same spot?

I had a cat that was doing that while on his way out. It was always in the same spot so I just found old bathroom mats and covered the spot and added old towels. When he made a mess I just tossed those in the wash and put new towels down. I had a layer of plastic on the bottom.

Just take him out a little more often.

My dog is older now and I give her an opportunity every hour or so. She trots out into the yard and sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't.

Actually, we may be on the same schedule.

You've got it !

I've had a bunch of pets, they all get old (hopefully). I've had sick animals and cared for my geriatric pet's over the years (my beloved Niki, a 16 year old cat, can be a real PIA & Caleb's lying at my feet, with a 4" incision on his back leg) many of my memories are not of their conditions, but of how I acted and what I was able to do for my best friend, who for years gave my nothing but unconditional love.

Not in the exact same spot. He just walks to wherever I am and starts.

I wish he'd just bark instaed.

The cat handled things in a much more dignified manner. When he thought it was time, he just wandered off. I found him in the bushes a couple days later. But that was last month. Damned animals keep dying on me.

Almost done, though.

Never again.

the coyote's ate my two of my cats last year right off my back patio. i killed 5 of them for every one of mine they got.

i have a 18yr old cat now that keeps gimping around. i've had to put all my old dogs to sleep along with my first wife... they hunted ducks better than she did and both dogs were a great loss.....

vicki's a much better pet i guess. she's only peed on the floor a couple of times and that's been when i've hid behind the door at night and scared her.

i hope she out lives me as i would hate the time when i have to put her down too :(

I'd take her off your hands if she's gettin' to be too much trouble. One pee stain more or less won't be noticed around here.

We call those accidents . Got a 12 yr old field trial lab .On multipule steroids a day had to have her tail shortened (happy tail syndrum) last year . Shes still a pup at heart . I'll do what ever it takes until it gets to bad for her .

If you are like me you think more of your dog than most of the people you know. If it were my dog, I know that, when he did die, I would give anything to have him stand in front of me and pee again. Anywhere he wants to.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Take care of your buddy for as long as he is not suffering. When that happens, put him down, a few more months doesn't change things.
I see a guy in my neighborhood draggin' his old dog around every evening. It looks like the dog is in lots of pain and doesn't really want to walk. I feel like telling him to have a good look at how his dog is walking and think carefully if he should be dragging him around every nite, but I keep my mouth shut. I think some people think more about how they feel as opposed to what is best for the animal.
BTW, I lost a 3 year Doberman to cancer some years ago.
