Zippered Case Question?

I just received my 14 that I ordered 5 months ago from A.G. Russell. It looks great and better than most factory knives. I also just ordered a 14" zippered case that I found on Ebay. My question is: Does the knife usually go in the case inside the sheath or out of it? If it goes in the case within the sheath, is the 14" case too small? Should I have ordered the larger 17" case? Thanks in advance. :)
 
Do NOT store your knife in the sheath.........

I have a lot of these zippered pouches.

I bought cheap white nylon socks at Walmart which I but the sheath in and store both in the zippered pouches. It prevents them from touching and developing verdigris....

If I understand this correctly, the zippered case should be large enough to hold both the knife and the sheath. Just not one inside the other. Is that right?

I do this too. This way I never have to wonder what sheath goes with a certain knife.
 
I just noticed that some of the cases have elastic bands on the backs which hold the sheath. I'm not sure if mine will come with those or not.
