I had seen some Case knives with the Zippo shield on the Shepherd Hills site a few times, wasn't paying much attention. I just figured the parent company wanted a little "Brand" love and it was only the shield that was Zippo. Then in Shepherd Hils "specials" section the other day I saw a mini copperlock with Natural Curly Maple Wood handles that looked very nice at a decent price so I made the move. It arrived today, and the tang stamp does not mention Case, does not indicate SS or CV (or CS), and has no pattern number or the USA dot stamping to indicate the year made.
Not complaining, it's a very nice knife, but that surprised me. I like the fact that Zippo has owned Case, and as a family owned, non public corporation they can do business they way they feel like it without shareholders screaming. It seems to be working out for Case, and trying to survive on traditional pocket knives selling for over $50 apiece has to be tricky with the modern knife competition.
It just seems odd to me, and wondered if there is more to it or just Zippo wanting to label it Zippo.
