so...

would you be able to use other fuels in a zippo lighter, say, if it were an emergency situation?

i mean, obviously not something like gasoline, but maybe household oil? motor oil?

just wondering.

on my way to NYC this past week i had the pleasure of stopping by the zippo factory museum in bradford, PA. pretty slick place. i picked up this aluminum fuel canister that holds spare fluid for zippos and adds some more dork-effect to my keychain/EDC.

I tried gasoline when I was a kid. It's smelly. I tried wood alcohol too. If I recall correctly that worked fine -- the only downside was the flame was invisible in sunlight so sometimes it was hard to tell if it lit.

I think you'll find motor oil won't light with a spark. Kerosene would work, but it's smelly....

I use Coleman latern fuel. It burns cleaner and it lasts longer if the lighter is sitting in the drawer for awhile. Plus there is no odor when it burns and it doesn't burn you if it leaks out in your pocket.

Rubbing alcohol (or Everclear, for that matter) works just fine and puts out a cool blue flame.

A word of caution--when i say "works just fine," I mean that the thing lights when you turn the wheel. There may be safety or evaporation or corrosion issues that I am not aware of. Everything seemed to work OK when I used it in my Zippo for a few months, though.
