hey, just wondering if anyone has seen or heard of a gas insert for a zippo lighter, i have a brushed chrome slim one, that has a yellow flame? basically this solves the evapourating fuel issue that zippos have, and still holds plenty of fuel. It also has a traditional yello flame, one that "flickers" like a normal zippo flame, but it uses gas, I think butane.

I read about it on some british outdors forum i think, can't remember where, but I would like to find this, if it exists.

Yeah, no dice on a slim one, but your better off with the classic anyway- its classic for a reason!

I have a Z-Plus insert that's been great. It doesn't sound like what you're describing, though. The Z-Plus puts out an intense blue flame. It's not made to fit a slim Zippo either.

@SparkyMark86 that is exactly what I'm looking for I think, and all the reviews on that site are all 4 or 5 stars

here are some pictures of my zippo, coz I had nothing better to do, and from the dimensions I pulled of soem site, it definately is a slim, so next time I'm out I'll have to pick up a classic sized one, and they are relatively cheap (sort of, some were 60 bucks, others were 30 , this is from zippo store)

@Scott Free - doe your Z plus insert use butane - doesn't that become unreliable after your go past a certain altitude limit? not that I'll have to worry about that, just wondering? also, how do you find the "jet" flame compared to the traditional flame?

thanks fro the links and comments

Yes, the Z-Plus insert uses butane. I said that mine has been great. I should have said, "SO FAR mine has been great." I have a friend who has spent a few hundred $$$ on super lighters. They all have eventually failed. While my $10 Z-Plus just keeps on going, I would never trust it as my only source of fire. I also carry bics, ferro rod, matches, and sometimes even a road flair. As for "altitude," I think you're right, but I live in the East, so it doesn't matter. If I lived in the West, it still wouldn't matter because I have back ups and back ups for my back ups. :)

The flame is like a little blowtorch. Pointy and intense. It's not windproof, though.

another fan of the z-plus...mine is still strong after couple years...and if it did go kaput, they're cheap to replace...

I've had both the Z-Plus and the Thunderbird insert, and while I do like that the Z-Plus puts out a strong flame, there's something nice about having that classic yellow flame. It's almost like having a classic Zippo without having to worry about evaporating fuel or the taste that NAPHTHA gives off.
