zippo or zippo slim?

I can't choose between a regular or slim zippo. I don't smoke, it is mainly for making fires. I like to carry a lighter (usually a bic) but i want to upgrade.

One advantages of a Zippo is the windscreen. It doesn’t take much breeze to defeat a Bic. Another is that you aren’t required to hold your thumb near the flame. They also look cool.

The big disadvantage is that the fuel evaporates quickly. If you carry one and refuel often that’s no problem. If you need to start a fire and the lighter is empty that might be a big problem. Just because of that I’d get a regular one. It will take longer to dry out. YMMV.

Regular Zippos are quite a bit more hefty but if the weight doesn't bother you get one of those. Not just more fuel but they burn a bit better in crap weather because of the chamber where the wick exits being bigger.

Defeat the evaporation problem with a rubber band cut from an old tredder inner tube. If you don't smoke there's almost zero inconvenience with that. Just roll it back from the join when you want to use it.

I smoke off a butane lighter for ease but mah Zippo kept like that will always work when I want it.

They don’t work for me. I’ve tried a ranger band. I’ve tried plastic electrical tape. I’ve siliconed the joint seal and wrapped the caulk with electrical tape. They don’t work for me.

Oh, they slow down evaporation. It’s better than nothing if you refill regularly. But to throw into a BOB and forget? Nope. I store them empty with a bottle of fuel.

Well, I carry a regular Zippo already for many years. I´m a smoker. But that´s not very important. If you wanna get a Zippo, I like the regular more than the slim-version. It takes more fuel and feels better in hand.

The slim is a little bit to small for big hands.

BTW: If you just want to use it sometimes and not about twenty of thirty time a day (like it is for a smoker) you should try to get not one with gasoline, but one with gas. It won´t dry out, when the lighter is in your car or somewhere else, where it may get hot. Because the gasoline version is going to dry out. The gas-version has a pressure-container, where the gas can be taken on without danger of drying out, instead of the gasonline-version.

Hope I could help you a little bit.

Kind regards

I just wanted to note, when you have a spark, you have a means to make fire. It might not be as good as a firesteel, but even a dry Zippo or a dead Bic can get you a flame with a little bit of pocket lint.

Has anyone reviewed the Butane Zippos?

The actual Zippo Blue lighters are garbage. It was by far the most unreliable lighter I've ever owned, including those clear plastic ones at the gas station that cost $.69.

My aftermarket butane insert for my old Zippo is a Z-Plus and has worked great for several years. I would strongly reccomend one.--KV

There's an butane insert for zippos called a Thunderbird that is like a Bic lighter in that you still have the flint and steel wheel and the flame is a "yellow" flame instead of the blue jet.
