does anyone here know if it would be possible to run a zippo lighter on methylated spirits?
or would it blow up in my face?

Not sure ... I've heard that Naphtha , cologne and even bacardi 151 will work in a pinch.
I stick to the ronsonol lighter fuel myself.
 
Probably wouldn't blow up in your face. BUT, "metho" is a solvent and is toxic enough so you wouldn't want the lighter to leak. Underfill and wipe it carefully. I also suspect that the flame will be hard to see. In my experience, Zippo lighters can (in a pinch, if you don't care about the lighter) burn almost any flamable fluid. For a while!
 
once when i ran out of fuel i used denatured alcohol from my stove fuel bottle, but i normally just use regular lighter fuel.
 
Well... it definately won't blow up..... but it may burn all wrong.... get ready to smother it with a cloth.
 
When I was a smoker the guys in the shop would use Methyl Ethel Ketone when out of fuel. It made the smokes taste bad and is harmful to one's health. For sure not recommended. A zippo will burn anything flammable.

:D MEK is some tuff stuff, LOL ,made the smokes taste bad and is harmful to one's health ;) as is smoking ...:p
 
I wouldn't risk meths in it (nor the crystal variety...) it won't blow up, might not even light!
The main problem will be with evaporation as meths vanishes pretty quick,in fact, this is a common problem for all Zippos.Much as I like them they are basically unreliable as fuel evaporates from them&there's no way of knowing if you have enough left....Bic has outclassed them in that area.
 
Years ago, I saw a guy with a run away lighter. Not sure if it was a bic. Someone had set it on "high" and when he used it the flame almost singed his eyebrows and hair. He dropped it and it stayed lit. It spun around in a circle and left a nice black burn mark in carpet. He had to throw another bowlers towel on it to put out flame. Not sure he got it shut off or just threw it away.
My buddy used some everclear in his zippo. I drank it, my zippo was full.
 
I've tried it before and found it difficult to light as well as it didn't produce a very big flame. I think it does not burn as hot as lighter fluid.
