I've seen a lot of those ziptie mods coming by the last couple of years so I thought I'd test it out myself.
The knife I've pretty much carried the most the last few months is a Buck Vantage Pro. So I thought I'd test it out on that one.
First of I tried this on a Spyderco Delica and I was surprised on how well this little modification worked. However, it's quite ugly so I removed it rather quickly.
Next up was the Vantage. As you all probably know, the Vantage doesn't have a round opening hole but more of a rounded off rectangle as an opening mechanism (apart from the flipper, obviously). I was rather sceptical about this fact since this would mean that the ziptie had some room to move around on the upper "bar" of the opening "hole". Indeed, this was the case but surprisingly it did not really have a negative effect. It does not move around in your pocket or anything as long as you tie it up real close. This disadvantage actually became an advantage for me. The Vantage does not have any jimping or any grip near the beginning of the blade, so it's harder to use this knife for food prep (especially when the knife is becoming slippery) or anything else requiring push cuts.
However, now that the ziptie is equipped, you're able to push the ziptie forward on the upper bar of the opening hole until the ziptie can't go any further. This allows you to have quite some control on the blade when doing precision cuts, and it improves grip.
But... in sharp contrast to the Delica, the Vantage does not open that easily with the ziptie mod when pulling it out of your pocket. For some reason (maybe because it's deeper carry, or it weighs more?), I often tend to lose my grip on the knife when trying to pull it out of my pocket, resulting in a quite awkward situation where I just made some kind of ridiculous movement trying to grab a knife which clearly did not end up in my hand but is in fact still sitting in my pocket.
So, I thought I'd share the pro's and con's I experienced trying out this mod on my Vantage. I hope you found it interesting
Conclusion: I think of removing the ziptie mod from my Vantage. It doesn't really look that good and -however it has some pro's- the con's outweigh the pro's. If I have to do foodprep, I'll just use some other knife such as a Delica (or a random Sölingen kitchen knife).
The Vantage with the ziptie at the end of the "bar" (your pants automatically push it to this end when opening it)
Same knife, pushing the ziptie forwards for extra grip when push cutting/more precise cutting
