Hey everyone
I wanted to share some ideas and new materials I have been working with. But first i have to full heartily say Thank You from the deepest part of my heart. And I know this isn't the place so I won't turn this into a thank you thread. But I do want everyone to know how much the combined support meant to me. It saved my life !! I mean it. It was a huge relief financially and it pulled me through the most difficult time emotionally I have ever experienced in my life. THANK YOU ALL.
So just a little update.
I'm feeling much better in my head about things and positive to move forward. It took a little while to shake some of the emotion stresses and stuff. But I'm feeling good.
I was able to start forging a billet of steel a few days ago. One handed still so a lot Smaller and slower than I used to but I am happy to do it at all .... I really am. Only a few hours a day but its something.

I wanted to share something I have been working on.
This is the piece of San Mai I was working on when I crushed my fingers... OUCH! I was considering selling it, but now I'm feeling rather nostalgic...maybe perhaps It deserves a spot on the wall (once completed)...
It is 416 stainless over my tribal pattern high carbon damascus. It is a test piece and I'm still figuring things out and learning about manufacturing it.......
Like, how thick to leave the stainless before I grind/clean up the scale on it. .... I got to thinking...well, any knife maker is going to grind it anyways and the pattern doesn't show up until you grind a bevel to expose the core, soooo maybe it doesn't need to be cleaned up?! Any steel you buy from a vendor has mill scale on it, right? This piece is not a good example of what im talking about because it has excessive scale. It was left for a bit at welding heat when i hurt my hand ......bla bla .....Just me thinking... I don't know

It's only ground on one side just to show off the core pattern. I can't grind the other direction,yet...lol!
I kinda like the forge scale on it ... a bit of a brute de forge kitchen knife, and also this steel would look great on a big d Bowie, I think. I love the patterning in the stainless and in real life you can just see the Damascus through the stainless from carbon migration! pretty cool stuff! I will be writing instructions on how to work with it. The core is perfectly centered and straight, so it will be up to the maker to grind it evenly on both sides. And this stuff is unforgiving!
Getting back in the forge, slow and steady —

That's the coolest damascus I've ever seen! Definitely worthy of being hung up!

Great contrast there. I really like it. Hopefully you are back to 100% soon.

THAT IS AMAZING!!!!

glad to see you working again, but i really had no doubt you would get back in the shop.

Great to see you back in action, Zoe.
No doubt a tough row to hoe, but you have an entire community behind you.

You and I are working on the same thing at the same time!
I've been wanting to do this on a dagger for a while, but figured I'd try something with one cutting edge first, though.

Looks like you got the proportions nicely controlled.

When do we get to see the finished knife??

Glad to see you are back at it, Zoe. I really like how that looks and it would really make a beautiful chef knife!

Looks brilliant Zoe, glad to see you back at it. I have been a fan of yours since I first saw your stuff. Go at a pace you can handle, slow and steady wins the race. Glad to hear your good news.!!

Thanks again and again. everyone. You all are why I'm fighting my way back. The support everyone has given has really made a difference. Slow and steady for sure. I can't do any faster. But at least I'm trying to be better maker each day.

Zoe, do you weld that in a can? i have a fair amount of 300 series SS will that bond with the carbon steel like the 416?

I TIG weld the seems so not in a can but like in a can. So I think ill hit you up later and we can talk about the 300 series stuff Thanks !!!
