hi all, i've been thinking about getting a zombie killer famine tanto cuz i love the tanto design of the knife.. and 1080 steel is great. i've heard bad reviews about the older ones that were
made in taiwan, but they're now made in the US.. any difference? i'd use it for a camping/survival knife of course cuz its too big for EDC, and i already have a benchmade 5000 predidio
for that. is it an all around good tool for camping? will it last me a long time? i dont have many knives in 1080 steel and this one is said to have a 'specialty' steel called 1080 cor-van
or something.. is it good? does it take an edge and keep it well? thanks!

The US made model is made of 1095 cro van<---not sure what the crovan part means. Same steel as Beckers, standard kabars, etc. I've never had a problem with putting a good edge on one or it holding it. Kabar has their 1095 down pat I believe.

I can't tell ya anything about the tanto famine performance though, never used one.

CroVan means added chrome and vanadium. Supposedly improves corrosion resistance and edge retention over "normal" 1095. I don't notice a difference in edge retention between my BK14 and my Ontario HEST, to be honest.

In general 1095 is a great all around steel, very tough, easy to sharpen, edge retention is ok. If you're cutting cardboard all day, there is better steel for that, but for a camp knife it does very well and you can easily sharpen it in the field.

cool, thanks for the info. Lycosa, it does have a cool factor, but the cool factor is the last thing i look for in a camping knife.. sure i do count it, who doesnt? but we're not talkin balisongs here
just camping knives :P

Then I would not recommend a tanto knife. A BK 7 for example would work, but basically anything with a belly is better for camp duty.
