I have been surfing with dial up since 1995. Last week I signed up for Yahoo SBC Dsl,and am absolutley stoked at how fast I can now surf. The sweet thing is that you can share your connection with another computer in your home, and that means two people can surf independently while only having to pay for one connection. Now surfing is truly a non tedious experience.

Cable is faster. :p

I remember when we got dsl. My wife was "o.k" with it, not expecting too much out of it. But ...... after we got it, and she had a chance to use it, she remarked to me, "How do people do anything on dialup?". If you knew my wife, combined with how she said it ....... it was funny. Now, she is totally a dsl snob. :D

I get 1.23 Mbps download rates consistently.

I know what you mean. I spent 10-12 years on dialup before finally going cable at the beginning of 2003 and I don't know how I ever did without it. Not having to wait while the machine dials up, then wait for the stupid noise and then watch as everything draaaaaaaags along. Now my computer is always ready to go and I have my wireless set up so I can roam the house with my laptop.

With cable, you have to watch out how many in your area are sharing your connection too. That can affect speed. Also, if you have need for fast uploads, cable stinks.

With cable, can't someone with a packet sniffer capture your info going to/from?

I hate dial-up, but still have to suffer with it when I'm on the road as most hotels don't have broadband yet. I had DSL for several years and had a rock solid 600k down/128k up connection and it rocked. Then I got an offer from my cable company where they actually paid me $30.00 per month for the first few months to try their service ($20.00 per month introductory rate with a $50.00 coupon towards total cable bill), so I had both cable and DSL available. I did a long comparison of benchmarking both at various times of the day and the cable connection absolutely rocked at 1.5mb down and 128k up. My ping times in Counter Strike and Unreal Tournament both went down appreciably, so I cancelled the DSL.

Just a few months ago I got a letter from my cable company telling me that as a result of network upgrades, I was going to see a speed improvement, and that there would be no increase in cost to me. Now I'm getting 3mb down and 256k up!!! For some strange reason, about the same time as the speed increase hit, the charges for my cable modem service seem to have disappeared from my cable bill. I keep meaning to call them and ask about that part, but somehow haven't gotten to making that call yet.

O.K. never mind about toast.net. I just tried it myself and they now charge for performance tests. I guess the word got out out about the free testing. :grumpy:
