Happy New Year Spyderco fans!
Is anyone else excited about this new model? I am excited about the edge geometry, the blade shape, and the handle construction. I also wonder how the handle will hold up without any mechanical fasteners. Has anyone actually seen a prototype of this knife. I also wonder when we will see any for sale. Inquiring minds need to know.

I would also love to see the sheath for it as well.

I’m sure you already know but for those who don’t, KC is taking preorders.

Beautiful and convex, but $390 is custom knife territory.

More so excited for the Spyderco Respect and the Darn Dao.

The Darn Dao will probably be too expensive but I am interested in the Respect. I would put a sharpened swedge on it and mod the sheath for Bagwell style concealed carry.

Hi David 45 -
While I agree that this is definitely in custom territory, I think that this one will most likely beat some customs in a number of areas. Especially since it is coming from the Taiwan factory that Sal uses. The items coming from there can and do beat customs in fit and finish, grind accuracy, and consistency from blade to blade. They will be superior to the similarly priced offerings from a number of Custom and Semi-Custom makers that we are all familiar with here at the forums. While I do love them as well, and do not want to name them here, I think these will give them a real run for their money. This will also give us knife addicts more choices, and that is a good thing.

I like that one as well! I will have my eye on that one. I noted that the description states:

The two-piece handle is machined from solid G10 slabs and seamlessly attached to the concealed tang with oversized Torx screws.

However the picture does not show these screws. I wonder if the Zoomer has the same fasteners, but does not show it in the picture or description.
Maybe Sal can chime in again here!

I believe the pictures are of rhe pre production prototype. The description is likely of the production model.

The Respect sheath was designed with that mod in mind.

Now I pretty much HAVE to get it...So the little brass knob is big enough that it will work as the stud that keeps the sheath from falling down your pants? Or will I have to replace the little brass knob with a longer, bigger one?

Also I believe I read you say that the Darn Dao was not possible for production for a long time at a feasable price due to the long flat grinds. I notice similar grinds on the Respect, so I guess you guys have that down.

How much wider than the handle is the guard on the Respect? It looks like an oval disk guard. How wide is the disk and will it make carrying it in that bagwell style uncomfortable?

Well Sal you got me again!

Davidz,
You are 100% right about fit, finish, grind and consistency of Spyderco’s in most cases. Plus Spyderco will most likely be around a lot longer to address any issues that occasionally arise. The few customs I lust over are seldom available and I’ve found very few things are worth a long wait. Plus, my tastes, needs and desires may change dramatically before delivery.
I’m probably just trying to justify passing up a very desirable blade because I’m on thin ice with the Mrs. after my last three Spydie orders. In the last couple months I couldn’t resist trying some new steels — PM2 in S110V, PM2 in M390 and tomorrow a Maxamet Manix plus a WE to update my sharpening capacity.
Now I’ll just lust over the Zoomer as well.
This place must try a lot of marriages. Next life I’ll just marry a gun and knife nut.

The brass stud is called a "Frog" and it works fine.

sal

I thought these were frogs Sal, where the stud connects to. The stud is also called a frog? Maybe because it is part of the frog?

Cool Spyderco is always teaching me something.

Edit: P.S. Bring he Spyderco Kumo back. Sprint run, flash run, exclusive, I don’t care how just bring it back!

In my usage I call both components "frogs"...that is the stud on the sheath and the leather holder part for your belt.

Maybe, I'm wrong...but that's what I call 'em both.

Just the sheath with the "stud" makes for a convenient "grab it & go" type set up for me. Just stuff it behind my belt and I'm good to go.

When I feel the need for a late night walk to clear my head, here's my current travelling companion...I might just have to give some "Respect" and belt time to a Spyderco, however:

Awesome! Now I know what to call that little stud.

I’m showing you some major respect for carrying that way. It doesn’t seem well known.

I have also seen people carrying this way with a sheath that looks like it should be for a lefty. They wear it right handed though with the edge facing forward. (Appears backwards) However they draw the knife “coach style”

Using the sheath + stud under your belt is an effective way of carrying a large-ish knife-- if your jurisdiction allows such a carry method-- please research your laws! Perhaps it's not too widely known that it can be carried that way. However anyone who's researched Bill Bagwell's Bowie Knife papers is well aware of the utility of that type of carry.

If you're fascinated with the American Bowie knife, but you're not familiar with Bill Bagwell...do yourself a favor and watch all his YouTube vids and read his articles, columns, and books on the subject. Time well spent I'm sure you'll agree!

Hi Lapedog,

Could be? I'm not an expert in that area of "frogs".

Hi Petey,

I learned it from Bill in '83 at the first forging seminar in Dubois, Wyoming.

Hi Sal -
Any word on when the Zoomer will be available?
Thanks
