Zowada vs G-10 Police

I posted this on the Spyderco site forums, but they've chosen to ignore it due to the rash of "what should I get" postings there, so I'll try it here.

I have a small dilemma on my hands. I'm looking at the Zowada collaboration or the G-10 Police model as my next knife. Both would be great, neither would be necessary. They're both very elegant designs, not exactly sheeple-friendly, but good for EDC where a Calypso Jr. or Salsa won't cut it (no pun intended). If I bought the Police, it would be rotated with my Endura and Calypso as my large EDC, and the Zowada would be rotated with my Native as my concealed EDC (IWB). Do any of you guys have any preferences regarding the two of these? By the way, I'm looking at the PlainEdge versions of both, the Zowada would be the VG-10 version, prices are so similar as to be immaterial, and I can only get one, but getting the other may be a possibility, just not soon. Or, I could pocket the money and save for both, but the spyder virus has bitten, and I dunno if I can hold out without a visit from the brown truck. I'm leaning toward the Police, since its larger hole would make it easier to open, and the lockback would give more peace of mind than a linerlock. I'd also have more uses for the Police as an EDC. However, the linerlock is a much smoother mechanism, VG-10 is a better steel than ATS-55, and the Zowada just looks so cool. Both would probably be still around when I had the $$$ to have both. Help!

Is the Zowada in VG-10?
I have a 2001 Spyderco catalog and has the Zowada as AUS-8.

But more to the point...
Although I don't own either knife, I personally don't like liner-locks much.

Good luck,
Allen.

The Zowda is VG-10 now.

Liko:

G10 Police has been discontinued. Buy now, or maybe never.

OTOH, you already have two large EDC, and only one concealed IWB EDC.

I guess I am no help... ;)

Hi Liko, sorry to hear that nobody responded to your post at the Sypderco forum. I know the feeling.

I have the older Zowada and a G-10 Police. I think the Zowada would be a better choice in your situation because the Police would be a near duplicate of your full size VG-10 Calypso and you already have a good substitute there with the Endura. At one time I thought that a VG-10 Police with micarta scales would be awesome, then I realized Spyderco already made that knife--the large Calypso.

The Zowada, like the Native, has a spearpoint blade and would make a good substitute for it. (I view it as a "folding boot knife"). I like the feel of the Zowada when opened and can close it more efficiently one-handed than the Native. (Note: the Zowada is not lefty friendly). The Zowada is also slim, lightweight and carries rather unnoticeably (bulk-wise) whether in your pocket or IWB. Definitely, get the upgraded version with plain edge and VG-10 over the older knife if you decide on the Zowada.

The botton line is you gotta go with your gut feel. I hope that I brought up some things for you to consider when making your decision. Sometimes the chase is more exciting than playing with the catch.

The reason I'd like the police as a third large EDC is my Calypso, though a good knife, is very rare, and if it were damaged I'd never forgive myself. G-10 is even tougher than Micarta, and the Police is still around in good quantities even though it's been discontinued.

But, since it is around in such good quantities, my next purchase will be the Zowada.

Liko, good choice! I'm thinking about getting the updated version myself--for the VG-10 and plain edge.
