ZT 0300 Question (opening)

I saw (and am having held for me) a new ZT 0300 today. Great knife. However, when I open the knife it is sort of slow. If I don't give a firm pust it doesn't even lock. I assume it's because a big knife it is designed that way and shouldn't expect it to spring open with any great speed? Please advise. Thanks

I have a 300 and I have to say it may be slower than say a Blur, but it still opens and locks with just a push on the flipper. It is a large blade though. That one may need some break in time maybe? Either way, you'll love it. The spring assist and flipper has spoiled me. Love them so much I just picked up a 302.

I'm used to smaller assists like a benchmade subrosa that springs open really fast. In comparison this seems slow.

Simple physics really... It's quite a chunk of metal being moved, so as long as it's locking and rocking it's all good. It will probably be better with time as well.

I own a 301 and it got alot faster the more I used it which is alot better than getting slower the more you use it. Once it is broke in and the newness/stiffness goes it is alot faster opener(on mine anyway). I thought the same when I first got mine so your not alone. IMO it proves your getting a brand new unused knife. Anyway enjoy your awesome NEW knife freind.

I really made this video to show an easy way to use the thumb studs, but if you skip to around 0:55 you can see my 0301 opening to compare it to yours.
Not blazingly fast, but it definitely opens with a thunk.

My ZT0301 opened as fast as kneedeep's - which is very fast. Easily as quick as a full auto.

I feel my BM 790 Subrosa opens 'ambitiously', while my ZT-0301 opens 'politely'. By the time I recover from the BM nearly jumping out of my hand, I would have been ready to use the ZT. If your ZT is real slow to open - or doesn't open fully - try loosening the pivot screw - mabe some oil.

Try bending the two arms of the L shaped torsion bar a few mm wider or longer. Trust me, it works and my once sluggish knife is now a lightning fast one.

Note: Before bending the torsion bar it's a good idea to trace it on some paper.

THere have been some good answers here. A little oil may help, and most likely the issue is an overtightened pivot screw. I would recommend you *slightly* loosen the pivot screw (using a T8 torx driver)- we're talking an eighth of a turn or less. The knife should lock up without much help, but it will never open lightning fast - it's got a big, wide, heavy blade. You should be able to adjust the pivot to where you have almost zero side-to-side play, but the knife opens well.

300 series don't use torx bits on the pivots. The problem could be one or a combination of 4 things. (1) Your coating has not worn down to the bare metal on the blade where the washers contact causing friction. (ZT's coating is some awesome stuff) (2) Your knife is improperly lubed. (3) The pivot nut is too tight. or (4) The knife you got sat closed long enough that it bent the torsion bar.

When my 0300 had a blade replacement it had characteristics like you described... I Cleaned it, removed a little coating on the contact areas, installed a new Tortion Bar, and bam... fast knife.

You would only end up deforming the titanium that the blade stops rest on, as well as the lock interface. Nt worth it in the long run. I think it would be a better idea leaving the knife to perform as it was designed.
