Well, I made the tough decision tonight. I ordered a ZT 0550. I was having a tough time with that and the 0300.

I have looked at exactly 1 0300. It looked pretty tough to me. How rugged is the 0300? I use a knife quite a bit a work, and really look for a knife that it tough, and built stout.

Please tell me more about this one. Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

I have the 0301. It's not a grear slicer, because of the thickness and grinds, and not a great stabber, because it doesnt have a penetrating point.
It's rugged, heavy, intimidating. It does cut and stabs, but it does not excel in any of those roles.

It depends on what you are looking for on a folder.

As others have said. It is a very rugged knife, hell you can use it as a crowbar in a pinch.

Great outdoors knife IME. The 301ST is more flexible in what the knife does. There are other knives that are more refined, but you'll have a hard time finding one that can take the outright abuse of the 030X family. There's a video somewhere of a guy testing his 301 to the extent he used it to open a soup can and then cut the soup can in half...and the knife was fine with it.

I love the 300 series...I have 4 of them. IMO they are excellent for military and law enforcement. If you want/need a knife that can handle a LOT of stress and use then the 300 is the way to go.

Kent, I'm a fireman. I'm on a ladder truck (we do all of the heavy work), and I'm always cutting stuff. Be it seatbelts, rope, webbing, and stuff of this nature.

Thanks guys for all of the feedback. It sounds like this one is making the shortlist, or multiples of it.

Another great thing about the 300 is the speed safe. I know some people don't like it in knives but if you have on gloves or are under stress IMO the speed safe makes it easier and more reliable to deploy the blade.

Thats like saying my truck has too many horsepower. LOL. Not saying that it hasn't, but I've never heard of the ZT/Kershaws, having a problem with the speedsafe.

A cop had one the other day, when he came by, and I got to fondle it a bit. I like it. I'm in.

You won't regret it!

Well they have had a problem with Speedsafe...because knife folks can't resist flipping open flipper knives fidgeting :) ...wearing out the torsion bar.

The assisted opening on many knives can get in the way of closing it, I have a CRKT that lives in my car glove box that I de-assisted because AO made the knife harder to open and close one handed with AO than without it....ZT300 kinda needs AO, but the knife being as big as it is is still easy to close one handed.

Had a zt0300 that the speed safe died on. It almost felt like it was unassisted. Zt has a legendary warranty and fixed her up for me. But it can happen.

300 is an amazing knife. Had several, but I have to say I actually prefer the 550. Both are beast and both are amazing tools.

Dprichard, I completely understand that stuff does break. But it is great to hear of your experience, and them taking good care of it.

I have on order a 550, and am probably going to order a 300 soon. I love me some options. Thanks for the insight.

As far as the recurve blades go, how do you sharpen them? Is there anything special to pay attention to? Is there anything special to do? I would like to know, as I am about to pull the trigger on one. Thanks guys.

On the sharpmaker I just use the corners, if you have an edge pro the stock stones will sharpen the recurve pretty well since its not to aggressive. Jdavis882 has a good video about using the edgepro with a 0301.
