It's said that a 18 to 22 degree bevel is what you want with the S30V steel on the 0301.
Does performance suffer if it's at the 30 degree bevel that the Spyderco SM offers?
More likely to chip at 20 degrees than at 30?
30 degree edge sharpness lasts longer under hard use?
Is it silly to get such a grade of steel if you don't get the ideal bevel?

Just to throw an idea out there, if the 20ish degree bevel is most definitely the way to go, I'm going to put a pivot under my SM to make it 20ish degrees and see-saw it back and fourth.
Should work, right?
Thanks for any input.

Your SM is 15 and 20 per side 30 and 40 inclusive.

I run S30V as low as 8-10 degrees per side without issue.

Oh... so I was being a dip?
Wouldn't be the first time.
So the SM is still not the ideal angle, correct?
Without issue... does that mean you use it pretty hard?

Without issue depends on the blade and what uses it will see. I go that low on something like a spyderco military because it is a pure slicer. A knife like your ZT will see a more stressful life especially in the lateral stress department, 15 per side would be fine for that blade.

Read the steel facts sticky, Joe uses a perfect angle selection example with S30V.

The 20 degree on the sharpmaker falls right into what you read about the ideal being 18-22 degrees. That is fairly obtuse for a pocket knife but if you plan on beating on it and doing questionably abusive activities with it then 40 degrees might be best for you. If you are going to cut with it and use it as a knife should be used then the 15 or 30 degree inclusive should work fine.
