ZT 0301 Design Flaw?

I know this folder is very well received so this might come as a surprise to some.

But...

I was having a conversation by email with a previous owner of a ZT 0301 and he told me that there was a design flaw where the thumbstuds/bladestop pin would fall out (unspecified whether through rough use or manufacturing defect) rendering the folder useless.

This came as a surprise to me because I have never read this QC issue anywhere else and just wanted to throw it out there on BF if this has ever happened to your ZT before.

Never heard or read about this happening. I guess it is possible but highly unlikely.

This can happen if the thumbstud is fitted incorrectly. The flip side of this error is that the blade can crack from too large of a thumbstud. It happens sometimes with press fit thumbstuds, but it's more a manufacturing error than a design error. There are plenty of knives made like this that are considered very well-designed, like the CRK Umnumzaan and Hinderer XM-18. It might be a concern for a sloppy company, but Kershaw does a pretty good job, so it's very rare that this happens. And if it does happen, I'm sure you know that Kershaw will fix it free of charge.

+1 on this. It's definitely not a fundamental design flaw, such issues are extremely rare, and any good company (whether Kershaw/ZT, Strider, CRK, or whoever else) will cover it under warranty.

Never heard of the studs falling out on any zt. I have heard of a 0200 with a hairline crack probably because of ill-fitted studs.

I have two 0301's and one of them has seen unbelievable hard duty, it once even popped a car door open. Never had a thumbstud issue. And the blade was pretty flexed on that one.

Bjblade - Zero Tolerance on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ZTKnives is having a contest soon where you can post 3 testimonials about using your ZT in EOD situations. If you want to win a ZT 0350 and / or have your stories shared for others to see, I'm pretty sure that they'd love your input.

2 shot, I was impressed. I carry a zt-9 for most of the heavy lifting, but that one needed the 0301.

Knivesandguns, thanks for the info.

Anytime -- I'm fairly certain your stories would top most out there! - thank you for your service and stay safe out there!

My ZT0300 had this problem, but I just put a little bit of loctite where the pieces touched and never had a problem since (at least a year later with lots of use).
