ZT 030x - Shaking noise -- grease it with what?

I noticed a shaking noise while the ZT030x is locked open. I've heard it's the torsion bar and if I add some grease it'll prevent the movement of the bar. I'm thinking of using some lithium grease I use for the rails of my handguns. Anyone think that would work out? I don't want it to melt and run in my pants...

Also, will I void my warranty by taking it apart? I heard KAI will send torsion bars out so I doubt this can't be recommended.

For my safety, I want to have the knife in the locked open state while taking apart, correct? I don't want to have parts flying around while opening!

The torsion bar is rattling around inside the milled out area of the handle. This happens sometimes...as the torsion bar moves around it pushes the grease to the outside edge and you get rattle. I have a tube of while lithium grease I use and it does a good job. You will not void the warranty by taking it apart and yes....make sure the tension is off the bar before trying to take it apart. Have fun and just shout if you need any help.

Not to hijack the thread but I have the same rattle. Does it affect the knife if it rattles or is it just a preference?

It doesn't affect anything in regards to operation.

My 0302 rattled like crazy but it still opened with authority. I decided to send it to Kershaw for some factory love. They got it on a Friday and I had it back Wednesday morning! Fast customer service!! No more rattle and my knife opens faster and harder now.

Bingo! You have the good stuff. My father passed along a tube of white lithium grease to me when I bought my first over and under shotgun. I use it on the rails of my pistols as well.

I like to clean a knife (if warranty allows it) every so often. I have used the white lithium grease (very soft stuff btw) in the cavity where the torsion bar lies in the handle and on the tang where it rides. Sparingly - don't need to dump a pile in there - just lube it. I use a drop or two of Militec-1 on the pivot between cleanings.

This should take care of your rattles and allow you see just how simple the Kershaw/ZT assist really is. ;)

So I took apart my 0303 yesterday, was fairly simple. The grease had been a little sparse. I cleaned it out and added a bunch of my own grease. I also cleaned and oiled it while it was apart. Also blue lok-tited the 3/8 bolt.

Three minor issues upon putting it back together:

- I don't know if the direction of the washers on either side of the blade mattered.
- It seemed impossible to line up the titanium, back spacer, the metal plate and g10 all together. I got it to the point of everything lining up except the metal liner, but the metal liner looks flush everywhere else on the knife. Any hints for lining it up next time? Did I put mine on wrong?
- I noticed that once I tried to unlock the knife it made a loud popping noise because of the friction between the titanium lock and the blade steel. I added a drop of lithium grease there as well. It seems to make it easier to unlock now.

Well at least the rattle is gone! :). Thanks for the tips.

I have a link to the take-apart & put it back directions prng (with pics). Since I don't know if it's okay to post it here, use my email function in my profile and I'll send the link to you. It'll help you decide if you did it right or help you to reassemble it! :)

Okay, I sent you an email. Thanks for the link, I'll look for it in email soon.
