ZT 0350 and Sharpmaker question

I have been keeping my ZT 0350 sharp on my Sharpmaker by just using the round parts of the rods. With the slight recurve in the blade, would I be able to use the flats also? I'm thinking of taking the angle down to 30deg. I'm thinking the flats would work better for me up toward tip as I have better luck not rounding the tip off when using the flats.

If you're considering reprofiling to 30°, and if you don't already have the diamond sleeves for the Sharpmaker, it's going to be very, very slow-going. The ZT-0350 is a thick blade with very wear-resistant steel, and a lot of it would need to come off. Would still likely be slow with the optional diamond sleeves, but trying to do it with only the medium/fine ceramics would take forever (if it'll finish at all).

If you do have the diamond, I'm sure you can use the flats. Just make sure to keep pressure light, as the edges of the flats (the corners) will be making the only contact in the recurve portion of the edge.

OK, just wanted to check as I thought I read before about just using the corners. I don't have the diamond rods, but I have some course ruby rods from Congress Tool that fit the Sharpmaker. I just sharpened my Milli at the 30deg setting tonight and raised a burr pretty quick. Either they cut real quick or the Millie was ground really close to 30 from the factory. Thanks for the info.

I think Spyderco usually gets pretty close to 30° from the factory, so that should've made it easier.

I reprofiled a ZT-0350 (S30V) a few years ago, using a Lansky system with a supplementary diamond hone (medium), and it's edge was considerably wider. Took a very long time to get it done.

I do have the DMT Aligner kit with diamonds. Cuts really quick, but I like using the Sharpmaker better. Think I should use the DMT instead? I was just thinking that a flat stone wouldn't hit the recurve part

For re-bevelling, I'd definitely use the Aligner. The edges of the flat hones will be doing most of the work in the recurve, but the diamond will definitely be faster than trying to do it on the Sharpmaker's ceramics. Just keep the pressure light, for the sake of the edge and also to preserve the diamond on the hones. I use my guided systems (Lansky, DMT Aligner/Magna-Guide) exclusively for re-bevelling, which is what they really do best, and then use other methods for maintenance & touch-ups.

I just sharpened my ZT 350 last night on my Sharp Maker. SM recommends Step 3 (edges of fine stones) 40* I did about 60 strokes and then used Step 3 with the UF Stones for about 60 stokes. 40* My results were outstanding. Try it!

Tried using the flats but it appears to miss the re curve section of the blade to me.
