ZT 0450 question

Hi,

I just pruchased a ZT 0450 at the local brick and mortar store for a really great price with the Veteran/ Veteran's Day discount so it was a nice deal at $140.

Great knife with one small problem. One of the two torx screws that holds the pocket clip in place has a stripped head so I can't take it out with a good quality Wixey torx bit. I want to remove the clip to possibly give me the option of trying an aftermarket deep pocket clip in the futrue

Otherwise the knife seems to be without flaws. The store has a no-return policy on knives but they will allow an even up exchange....when they get more in. They only have one other 0450 right now and it's the display model and it too has one stripped pocket clip torx screw.

I've heard that ZT has excellent customer service and I'm thinking about just sending it to them to have them take care of it versus trying the even up exchange.

What would you do?

Thanks

Send it in. My experience with KAI's warranty and customer service has always been excellent. They will likely beat their stated turnaround time, and your repair sounds like a pretty quick fix.

Send it in. Should be a very easy and quick fix with a fast turnaround time.

Why not have the dealer swap out the good screw in his display model for your bad one and he can send his in? ;) Otherwise, he is causing two customers to send them in for new screws.

You could file or grind out a slot on the screw head so you can remove it with flathead screwdriver. In the meantime, call zt to send you some new screws. Then maybe you wont have to be without your new knife.

Just wondering how a new knife has a stripped screw on it? ZT will send you screws if you email the warranty returns department. IMO, not worth the time for sending a knife in just for a simple pocket clip screw. Hell, I may even have a set at the house that I'll send you if you're interested...

Because we cannot remove the bad / stripped screw from my knife.

Thanks but I am unable to remove the bad stripped screw from my knife with the tools I have which is a Wixey torx bit. Dealer tried and he couldn't get it out either.

Get a stripped screw remover bit. I like ZT, but those screws strip by just looking at them and I've used the bit a few times to remove a ZT clip screw.

Seems like my deep carry clips came replacement screws.

You can slot the screw with a cut off disc on a Dremel and then just use a regular old flathead screwdriver to remove it.

I'm sure what some of the other members suggested would work, but if it's brand new I wouldn't take a Dremel to it.

KAI/ZT has an extraordinary warranty and they'll make it right, I'm sure. It may be stuck there for 2-3 weeks, but at least it'll be fixed.

Thanks, but I'm not very adept with tools and I would worry about damaging my brand new knife by trying to do something like that.

I would then say yout best bet is call zt and send it in. That way everything will be done right. I know how dissapointing it can be to buy a nice new knife only to find there is something wrong with it. Its a bummer. Maybe ask them if they can accomodate you somehow to speed up the process.

Thanks PM sent. Will try one more time to extricate the bad screw

I have had a similar issue with a torx screw. I was able to remove it by using a size up. The bigger size was barely able to grab the head. I've seen someone else use a hex head on a stripped torx screw.

Glad the OP got a new knife and problem is solved. To those that are saying that ZT screws strip easily I would have to disagree. I would estimate I take apart over 1000 ZT knives a year for anodizing. When I first started doing this I had strip screws about 1 out of 20 knives. Once I switched to Wiha bits I would say I estimate less than 5 stripped screws total in the past year. Crappy torx sets from most hardware stores are the problem. If you are going to tinker with your knives I highly recommend Wiha bits.

Agree. I suspect the first knife they sold me was a return that someone else screwed up.

By the way the ZT 450 is awesome in my opinion. I can't believe how wonderful the fit n finish, opening and closing actions, lockup and pocketability are.

I highly recommend this as a first step into high end knives as it was for me.
