Hey folks,

I'm interested in knowing what is the difference between the newly arrived zt 0454 and the well known Shirogorovs. There seems to be a lot of hype with the zt and the price is skyrocketing. It is a limited edition and the feedbacks have been quite positive. On the other hand, Shirogorov is renowned in the custom knife world for a while.

The question is: does zt 0454 deserve it's fame and how does it line up to Shiros? If you had a bit more cash, would you go for a production shiro instead of the zt?

Thanks, any input appreciated!

I have both. While the 0454 is extremely well built, I'd have to say save your pennies and go for a shiro. The shiro is much more refined in my opinion.

Moved to general discussion

Haven't handled the ZT but I really like the looks of it. That said, the secondary market price deters me from ever owning one. I recently got a new Shiro Hati for much cheaper than the ZT, direct from Russia. I'm definitely saving for another one... they are that good.

Own the 454, actually looking for the Shirogorov equivalent reputable online retailer. The ZT 0454 is so far the best knife I've ever handled. So light yet rock solid, so slim and overall compact yet so much of a knife. Perfection. Don't get me wrong I love other ZTs, Spydercos, Lionsteels and Striders but this thing just handles and looks so good. It isn't a tool to be honest, I can't imagine prying lids open or ripping nails out with it etc. it's something else though - when you get it you'll know.

I own neither, nor do I have plans to. But if I were looking at these two parricular knives it would be the Shirogorov, hands down. The ZT is simply not worth the secondary market price as far as I'm concerned, the original price was kind of pushing it. I handled a Shirogorov, can't remember the model, and it was a solid and well built knife, very smooth. That being said, I'd probably get something from Matt Diskin instead. But that's just my .02.

I handled a 0454 at a local knife shop and dangit if it isn't one of the smoothest knives I've felt. Not worth the secondary market prices IMO, although one plus for the 0454 is since ZT is based out of Oregon, shipping it back for any warranty work would be much faster than shipping a Shirogorov back to Russia. That would sway my mind towards the ZT if I were to ever pick between the two, but I don't expect to be getting either for the time being. Got other things on the radar that $1k will be more useful for.

I think that the 0454 is a good knife, but a bit fancy...looks more like an art project. I've had many ZT's and have liked them all; my only one right now is the 0770/M390 which I think is perfect for my casual uses. It's three ounces with a wonderful steel.
I would take the Shiro as it looks like a working knife...

I don't have either one, but it seems to me that there's a lot more cachet in owning a Shirogorov custom than a ZT production piece, even a ZT LE.

I have a Shiro on washers, and cannot seem to put it down. I haven't carried any of my Striders, Will Moon Customs, or my Jason Clark let alone any of the ZTs I have since getting this beauty. I like it so much I bought another, and am thinking of selling off half of my collection and buying a few more. Totally worth the money. So super smooth, and the craftsmanship is incredible.

I have both:

2- 0454s & a mod 95 w/srbs.

The only similarities I see are that they were designed from Russian makers. I believe Sinkevich only did one colab with Shirogorov.

The 0454 is much thinner, lighter and the balance is heavily towards the blade. The Shirogorov is very very balanced. The 0454 actually is closer to an Andre thorburn l51 in balance.

The 0454 is full carbon fiber scales with a lockbar inserted into the scale, not a full frame lock. The Shirogorov is a full frame lock.

The action on the 0454 is very mechanical and fast, the sound and feel is unique and similar to the 0888. The Shirogorov is lightning fast and has the smoothest soft sound of any flipper I have handled. Speed wise & smoothness is won by the Shirogorov.

Price wise my Shirogorov was $1300, my 0454s were $500. In my opinion the +$800 is more than justified for the Shirogorov. To me its at minimum a mid-tech, but I consider it a custom.

What does all this mean? The zt 0454 is one of my favorite knives, the shirogorov is just a slight step above.

*and yeah trying to get a hold of Shirogorov for any work is next to impossible.
