I said I would do a review of this bombproof folder in my recent comparison thread between the 0500 and 0301. After much debate I settled on the 0500 based off it's unique sealed pivot and lock design, oversized thumbstuds, overall look.
I had a budget for under $200, and stumbled upon this online store in the netherlands called Allinwonderland.eu. I got lucky, it was their last one in stock. I bought for ~$165 with $10 international shipping which is pretty good as far as international stores go. They seem to have a big sale going on where you see the "real" knife price in checkout. Some knives are 20-40 euros off.
Anyway, enough of that - onto the review!
The knife came in yesterday and as you can see, not in the best packaging...looks pretty beat up.
But everything is fine inside!!
First impressions:
WOW, this knife is solid, probably the most solid folder in my collection.
It has some heft too it but nothing too overbearing. It feels great in the hand, despite the blocky look, and the G10 texturing allows for a very secure grip.
I love the oversized thumbstuds that allow very easy deployment, and as it's been said already, the 0500 locks up like a bank vault.
I am glad this version does not come with the glass-breaker/stud on the pocket clip. In my opinion the 0500 looks better without it.
Now for the pocket clip, I've ready many complaints that the design allows for the edge of the pocket to get caught under the clip itself. I tried forcing the edge of my pocket under the clip but it never got caught under. Maybe this error was corrected?
I will say though that it is pretty small for such a large knife.
Here we have the 0500 posed with the rest of the folks.
Next to the CRKT M16 its definitely one of my thickest folders.
Overall, I can attest to all of the good comments said about the 0500 and then some. It definitely stands out as one of the best in my modest collection.
