I recently purchased a ZT0500 MUDD knife. I noticed on the blade it says "G & G hawk design" then next to that it has XXXX. After watching some you tube videos I noticed that some don't say GG hawk on them. Also I don't see the XXXX on any. Also at the back of the knife there is no little bolt/glass breaker like I see on some attached to the pocket clip. Thanks

I think Kershaw marks their "blems" with the X's. these are knives that didn't make it past QC, usually due to a minor cosmetic defect. If you purchased the knife as new, and it wasn't advertised as a blem, then you may want to get your money back. If you paid less than they usually go for, and nothing is wrong with the knife functionally, then you are G2G.

Regarding the 'XXXX' marking, the previous replies are exactly right: that's how Kershaw/ZT marks their blems (knives that didn't pass QC). Again as already mentioned, it's usually for some minor cosmetic reason, but regardless of the reason they didn't pass QC blems don't carry Kershaw/ZT's warranty. If it was advertised as a blem or you got a good deal on it, I'd say keep it, but I agree with the above that if it was advertised as "new" or didn't say anywhere that it was a blem, you should consider requesting your money back (and, if you bought it through eBay/PayPal or someplace like that, filing a buyer protection claim if the seller refuses to make right).

As for the "G&G Hawk Design" marking and bolt/glass breaker, I think later 0500s came with the designer marking and without the glass breaker. So there's nothing there that raises a red flag. For the reasons already mentioned, though, the fact that it's a blem is something that you may want to pursue depending on how it was advertised, etc.

I agree with Scott on that price. I think Kershawguy had some of these blems a few months back and they were selling around that price. If you got it for less than that, or even for that, then I would keep it if there is nothing mechanically wrong with it. A lot of people have trouble identifying the reason a Kershaw is marked as a blem.

Btw, I had just gotten my 0500 out about a 1/2 hour before seeing this post. Was putting a new laynard on it. Thinking I may have to put it in my pocket since it hasn't had any pocket time lately!:)
