ZT 0550 Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 Scale Question

Hi all,

I know this is a proverbial "dead horse" topic, but my question isn't one that I could find the answer to with regards to the differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2 ZT 0550s.

I'm a lefty who started carrying in my LFP recently after having lived my entire life using RFP like knives come standard. I love the deep carry clip on my Gen 2 0550BLK, but really want a replacement scale for it that looks/feels better and won't shred my pocket as much as the stock scale. However, I've never seen an aftermarket scale with the Gen 2 clip holes drilled for LFP carry. I've decided to pick up a scale and attempt to add the clip holes for the deep carry clip myself, but I have a question.

Would I need a scale that is blank (i.e. no clip screw holes) or can I use one that is drilled for the Gen 1 clip style? So in other words, does one or the other screw holes from a Gen 1 scale line up with one or the other screw holes in the Gen 2 liner so that I could just drill a second (well technically third) hole and install my clip? I realize that even if this does work, i'll have a random extra hole, but I can live with that if it means I'll have a nicer scale on my favorite EDC.

Thanks for the help!

You can try Dan(Kryptoglow) if he is still making scales. He was doing 560s with the holes drilled for lefty. Doesn't seem like far of a stretch to do it on a 550. Others to check are Rival and The Preacher. They may be able to come up with something for you. You could get one and drill it yourself. The area under the clip needs to be flat for the clip to fit properly. I know Rival makes some of his 550 scales with smooth bolster which would make it easier for you to drill yourself. You would have to check the length of the clip screws though. If Dan can't do it shoot Rival a message and see what he can do. He does quality work and is very easy to work with. Good luck.

Yea, that's actually the reason I asked. There are a couple of kryptoglow scales for the 0550 I really like, but one isn't drilled and the other is drilled for Gen 1. I was wondering if I could make either work.

If the scale already has a flat area where the clip mounts I would get that and drill my own holes. That would be the easiest thing for me. If you find one of the Hinderer gen1 scales you should be able to use one hole and drill the other. Same with the Kryptoglow you mentioned earlier that was drilled for gen 1. Try emailing Keeth(Rival Customs) and see what he has to say. He may be able to drill one of his to accept the gen 2 clip. Never hurts to ask and you would have some say in design and color patterns.

Edit. Actually not so sure about either one of the holes lining up from a gen1 scale to a gen2 frame now that I think about it. I assumed one would, but realized assumption is the mother of all fups and didn't want to steer you wrong.

I could put lefty holes in any one of these and more. I add lefty holes to order, so that will depend on what your knife is, Gen one or two.

Sent you a PM BellaBlades.

In the meantime, any have any insight on whether one of the screw holes will line up?

I just compared both stock handles, and no, they do not line up at all. Totally different hole pattern all together. You would be best to stick with whatever set up you have. Unless you want to drill and tap the steel.
