Hello,

To keep a long story short I ordered a ZT 0551 last week from a brick and mortar store for $240 (and a surprising $36 shipping). Anyways it finally gets here today and the knife is not what I was expecting. For one there was no paperwork with the knife. I saw some pictures and saw that the knife came with paperwork and came bubble wrapped. Mine just came with a brown piece of paper wrapped around it. The blade has the worst centering I have ever seen on a knife, it is completely touching one side. I can also wiggle the blade side to side when it is opened and closed (real bad blade play). Here's my question, did these knives come wrapped in this brown paper as shown in my picture, or is it safe to call them up and tell them they did not send it "new" to me? Their receipt says no refunds... I am so disappointed with this, having just spent $276 bucks.

Any help is greatly appreciated. At least if I can confirm it was supposed to be bubble wrapped and come with paperwork then I am calling them up and telling them I am sending it back regardless of their no refund policy. I don't even care that I'll eat the $36 shipping.

Call your credit card company, if thats how you paid, and tell it not to honor the charges because you did not receive what you ordered.

Sounds to me like the pivot screw is loose - I'd tighten it (It takes a Torxx T8 bit - both the Kershaw keychain driver and Benchmade kit, as well as sets from the 'big box' stores, will have this.) and try it again. The first one I looked at locally, when they first came out, was loose - the rest were fine. The blade's centering is a function of the pivot screw's tightness. Too loose, and that framelock's pressure will push the blade to the other side - just like your example. It will also have play - just like your example. It could have been displayed - the store's salesman could have simply tossed the generic sheet and bubble wrap.

Where do you live and how was the knife shipped? USPS First Class - or Priority Mail - yep, $36 is a bit high. Overnite to Alaska, well, it might be fair!

PS I thought my purchase over - decided on the 0551 - and grabbed the wrong box - yep, the way off centered/loose one. Fortunately, I had a T8 handy when I got home - it was perfect in mere moments... KEEPER!

I have multiple 0551s and all came with the usual ZT bubble-bag and paperwork. Like others have said, try adjusting the pivot tightness before you assume that the centering is a permanent/fatal flaw. But if you're still not satisfied with the knife or see other signs that it was not, in fact, new, definitely give them a call. If they refuse to make it right/make an exception to their "no refunds" policy, as powernoodle said, you can dispute the charge with your credit card company on the grounds that what you received was different from what you ordered.

You might want to think it over a little before you return it, you paid a high price and did not get paperwork but, you got an 0551, they are very hard to get and will not get any easier. You can most likely center the blade yourself, like others have said. If you can't , send it to Kershaw to center and I am sure that Kershaw customer service will send you the paperwork for the knife. The brown paper is what Kershaw uses for packing material in the shipment box , not in the knife boxes, they just had the bubble pouch and warranty info, what was the serial number ?

Thanks everyone! I have to work another long shift but I'll think it over today before I do anything. If I do end up sending it to Kershaw is it OK that I do not have the paperwork with it? I wasn't sure if it was supposed to have any warranty information or anything like that. The knife itself is really nice so I would hate to let this one go. I was just a little surprised when it showed up like that.

Yeah, I'm sure that'll be fine. :)

If you go to Kershaws website there is a form you can print out to send in with your knife. You do not need your warranty card. I sent in a 551 for a blade play issue and just sent the knife in a baggie in a flat rate box with the print out and a note with what was wrong with the knife. I got it back about 2 weeks later, well not the same one, they sent me a new knife. I guess the one I sent in couldn't be fixed.

You could sent it to Kershaw in a plastic bag and they'll take care of it for you :) +1 to all of the other comments regarding the standard packaging.

All my 0551s came in bubble wrap with the paperwork and a small Silica gel pack. Seems the place you bought it from is not a kershaw dealer, and most likely just acquired some from another source.

Looks like you got a knife that had been pulled out and played with some. No big deal and as hard as they are to find I guess its worth hanging onto. The pivot can be adjusted so the blade center is not an issue. Simply give it a tweak with wrench and fix it. As for the paper work. I'm sure it was there. Sounds like the dealer lost it when he checked out this folder. No one can blame him for that but he should have stuck the papers back in the box. He may still have them if you ask him.

Mine came in bubble wrap and had some "paperwork", neither being that important, but I can understand it making you wonder about the knife (and dealer).

As others noted, try adjusting it. Likely it will work out. I had to fiddle with mine a bit to get it to settle down.
If not Kershaw will fix it up for you with less hassle than trying to return it to the dealer.

The paperwork is no great loss, its just a generic pamphlet.

I have one ZT 0551 and it came in bubble box with silica gel, paperwork and in a black box, not the green one as at your picture.

Wharn,

I have to know... the suspense is killing me...

Did you try to tighten the pivot screw (Torxx T8)??

They are a bit rare - and anything can happen when you mail it back, the least result being you'll be out the shipping. That's bound to be more than the cost of a set of Torxx drvers, like the little 'KOBALT' set from Lowes. I'll bet an e-mail to Kershaw will get you that paperwork and bubblewrap bag - maybe even a keychain Kershaw toolkit for your troubles - call them, even.
