Zt 0551 question.

So, I have seen quite a few 0550's and 0551's, but in the last week or two there was a 0551 that showed up on the exchange that had a hole all the way through the lock bar in the location of the detent ball. I am assuming since the knife looked new, was listed as LNIB, and didnt have any damage around the hole, that it came that way from the factory. I was just curious as to why this knife had the hole all the way through the lockbar, when all other 0550's and 0551's I have seen, have a blind hole drilled or milled fom the inside only, leaving the outside of the lock bar smooth.

Any info would be appriciated.

The gen1 version of the 0550 had the milled portion on the lockbar facing inward. For gen2 they moved it to the outside. As for a hole being milled all the way through im not sure what you are talking about.

You're thinking of the lockbar cutout.
He's talking about the hole at the detent ball.

Like in this SG2 JYD. See the hole at the top corner of the lockbar?

As far as I know though there is not a hole drilled from the outside at the detent ball. My 0550 doesn't have one like that.

My guess is that the ball had issues, and someone with the means and knowledge (perhaps someone with a shop) fixed it for them. Drilled a hole to pop the old ball out, and replaced it with a new ball.

Or it is an anomaly.
 
May have been an anomoly, hard to say exactly. Nothing that effects performance or much of the aesthetics. Wouldn't worry much about it.
My 0550 has two detent balls in the lockbar. Doesn't bother anything, works flawlessly.
 
I didn't really care either way. I was just curious, as I had not seen one completely through like that.
 
Yeah, here's a pic of my 0550 and 0551. And like juju said, my 0550 has two balls in the lockbar as well. Kai must have went through minor changes as the 055x model progressed. Whatever they've done, they have done a fantastic job with these series of knives. I love both of these knives quite dearly.

 
I believe there is an 0551 on the exchange as of today without the hole. Progression I suppose.
 
None of my [remaining] 0551s have the hole all the way through and I have an 800, 900, 1300 and 1500 serial number. Definitely seen them before though, so not a big deal or anomaly of any sort. Also, buy one OP, you'll love it. :thumbup:

That means the one I got from you was the lowest of them? I feel like we're connect. :p

Oh yeah, I agree, you should definitely buy one.

If anything, you got my one and only Holey 0551 which means I let an odd one out of my grasp which is rare for me :D
