ZT 0551 Question

The 0551 is not assisted. The 0566 and 0770CF are both assisted-openers that use Elmax.

Is the 0566 still a bulky heavy knife? Im kinda looking to get a ZT knife for its strength and toughness.

0566 isn't bulky. Nor are the 0770s. There are also Elmax Blurs coming according to BladeHQ

The 0566 and 0770 are both noticeably slimmer than the 0550/0551. The 0770CF is the thinnest and lightest in the ZT line-up. It is still a ZT though, so you can rest assured that the strength and toughness are there. The 0566 has a good weight to it, and it feels very solid in hand, despite being slimmer than, say, the 0550. The ZT site has the 0566 listed as half an ounce lighter than the 0550. The 0550 is just a tank of a knife. It has a nice, thick titanium slab on the locking side and a corresponding thick G10 scale and full steel liner on the other side. The 0550 even makes a different sound when it locks open.

Not bulky but much heavier than the 0770. The tan Elmax Blur with blackwashed blade looks awesome from BladeHQ.

There are a lot of threads on the topic comparing the 0566 to the 0770, 0560/1, and others. It's simply a smaller version of the 0560 with a steel framelock. It's not exactly a thin gentleman's style flipper, but it should cut just about anything you need it to.

Ok this is the first I'm hearing of this. What the hell, man? KAI is really pulling out all the stops this year!

My poor bank account...

You're welcome lol I know. I'm just going to start direct depositing all my paychecks to them. Haha

Nice. But then why does for eg the 0300 go for almost $300? What makes it double the price? Isn't the Elmax steel superior? What else justifies the big price jump?

A few different things in effect here:

1. There is a difference bewteen actual price and MSRP. What you are looking at is the MAP price. Retailers are not allowed to advertise whatever price they want. They have a minimum advertised price, that does not mean that is the price you pay. The Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price is a whole other issue in and of itself. (Topic for it's own discussion)

2. My guess as to why the 0300 series goes for what it does is that it takes longer to make those than it does say a 0556. You have DLC coatings which adds to the cost, a larger chunk of Ti vs a SS chunk, different blade steels require different heat treating protocols, heat treating is not a standard charge across the board. In the end a manufacturer can sell their items for whatever they feel is a reasonable price, after they have covered their costs and factored in enough profit to remain in business. (Topic already discussed in depth hundreds of times, a search might be in order).

3. Elmax vs S30V? Superior? Too many subjective variables to even begin to address this properly. My honest recommendation is to search and read, a lot. These are very interesting topics and have been discussed in the previous not to distant past. There is good information there, if you are willing to look for it.

The 0566 and the 0770 are both assisted, but they can both be deassisted as well. The 0566 is thinner then the 0550, but it is very close in weight (0.5oz lighter) to the 0550. It is also a hair smaller then the 0550 but I would say that the 0566 is just as strong as the 0550. The 0551 isn't made anymore. The 0550 is the same thing but it has S35VN steel. I would say Elmax is better then S35VN, but not by much
