Not sure if that is happening. I thought the 551 was just that limited run of 1000 and would then be "replaced" with the 550. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The flipper version seem to be the current hot item everyone is waiting for.

There are still some available at a reasonable price. At least one dealer I see is still listing them. (Email info sent).
Edit: those are apparently gone. :grumpy:

Yep, the 0551's were already made, you can find some on the secondary market. The 0550 with a different grip pattern and less exotic steel will be released as a regular production.

They should have made the 0551 a production model for at least a couple of years.
If they profited on 1000 of them, WHY would they NOT want to profit on 3000-5000 of them?
Plus the economy of scale would have lowered manufacturing costs.

You'd sort of thinks so.
There are a couple of VERY long threads on the subject and it may be discussed there.
It may have something to do with the availability of the steel used in the 551.
Almost as interesting is that the price of the 550 is the same as the 551.
Maybe the 551 was sort of a gift? ;) Or they did the run to generate interest for the full production model. Dunno.
At any rate, I'd be the last one to argue with Kershaw about production and marketing, they seem to "get it" pretty well.
I guess I really don't fathom the sprint run frenzy.
Ask Spyderco, seems to work well for them.
And "frenzy" may really be the operative word. Anything that generates interest is overall good for the whole product line.
I, for one, definitely get the Spyderco frenzy when a sprint comes out, and it does increase my desire for Spyderco in general.

Thank you all, I guess I have to find one on the second hand market or paymore the I want to.

Honestly, it's expensive, and mine has a very sticky lock, but it's probably the nicest large folder I've owned. I'm using the umnumzaan as a reference.

I have 2. Only one has a sticky lock, but both have very minute vertical play. I guess I could bend the lock bar in, but I'm scared I'd screw it up somehow.

There are still several hundred to be released. The entire run of 1000 has not been fully released to the market. Some dealers have a timeline of may before they receive their allotment. Those who missed it on the initial release still have a chance to get one.

I sent mine in. Came back with no play, no sticking, blade centered and smoother opening and closing. Oh, and sharper too.

Mine was very hard to unlock also. Adjusted the screw a bit and it got better. After a good deal of thumb action its settled down to being acceptable (better one thats a little hard to unlock than too easy).
I considered sending it in, but everything else is spot on...detent, centering, no play, etc., so there seems little point now.

You consider it nicer than your Umnumzann? Pretty high praise indeed. Could you elaborate at to what you find superior?

I bent mine in to fix it, worked perfect!

Could you be a bit more specific for those of us mechanically challenged. How and what did you bend, where, and it what direction.

0551 = 0550. Aside from two minor differences, it's the same knife.

The only difference is the scale pattern and the type of blade steel which arguably may make the 0550 an even more attractive knife. If you like one you will like the other.

Personally I like the proposed scale pattern on the 0550 better than the brick pattern on the 551, which never really appealed to me very much. I had mine pimped with a new carbon fiber scale. There are no flies on the proposed 35v steel either.

ZT0552? Never heard of it. You do mean the 0550 right?

Little thing called production schedules, they do make other knives as well. Not to mention the entire Kershaw lineup.

I guarantee that will push back production of the Hinderer flipper model by at least a few years, among other models.
